I am running out of ideas and I dont know what else to do.

He started liking Mario about 18 months ago and since then the obsession has got worse. Its all he talks about, all he plays with (action figures) he draws, makes up his own lands and worlds all the time. Everything is about Mario and he cant seem to have a conversation about anything else. He wonders around pretending to be Mario all the time, from in the supermarket to the swimming pool.

He has gone from having a wide group of friends to one friend, as they both share a passion for Mario. He has really isolated himself from other friends. When I try inviting them around it ends up with them playing Mario or playing by themselves.

His schoolwork is suffering too. He has always been a bright boy but now he spends his time thinking about Mario and he is starting to not make any progress in his work. His teacher wasnt overly concerned but I will be speaking to his new teacher when he goes back.He went on a creative writing course that he was invited on by the school to help him with his own ideas, as all his stories ended up being about Mario. He had used his imagination, so they were not copied stories, but still they had the rigidity.

I dont know what to do. He has other hobbies but they seem to get overshadowed. We read together everynight but he cant seem to talk about the books we read - all the queations get a 'umm' response and then he starts talking about Mario again.

His younger brother has ASD and I do see some traits in him - such as hand flapping and some sensory things, but this has never really impacted on him before.

Help - its driving me crazy!

Shades.. Your post is sending up a red flag to me..

I'm trying really hard not to see AS traits, but I really would get it checked.. There is already asd in the family, the obsession that is now getting in the way, sensory and hand flapping..

Has he been assessed? As at least you could rule it out?
