My 10 month old was born 1 mth prematurely. He started crawling at 9 months and can climb the stairs and cruises. He alot of teeth for his age - 6 teeth with another couple on there way. My problem is that he doesnt babble at all. he makes 'ssssss' sounds and raspberries and a few vowel sounds but does't babble constanants like da ba ta etc. He is also very grumpy and i am always being told what a serious baby i have :( any ideas or advice?

Raspberries and vowel sounds is babbling... He's just getting his tongue and teeth around the various noises, don't worry. Regarding grumpy, unfortunately some people's default 'not-doing-anything' expression is quite serious-looking, even if they're quite cheerful. Do you smile and laugh at him and encourage him to smile and laugh back?

Hi - thanks for your quick reply! My husband and I smile and laugh alot around our son. It just seems to take a lot to make him laugh or smile. HV said he should be making constanant sounds and that he is not 'officially' babbling. suggested we see a speech therapist if no improvment ..... does this sound like delayed speech to you? i know i shouldnt compare but all the other babies we meet who are the same age chatter away to their toys and seem to smile and laugh lot .......

You'd have to go with the HV advice, really, they see a lot more babies than the rest of us and they have a better handle on whether development is normal or delayed. In the meantime, keep encouraging him to make sounds like mama and dada. Good luck
