I don't know where he's heard the word girlfriend, but he says "I want mummy be my girlfriend." Then he said I'm his boyfriend...what's going on?

He's being 4?

lolapoppins · 29/07/2010 20:58

Hes's being a small child, and doesn't understand the concept of 'boyfriend-girlfriend' relationships as we do. The same as when little children say they will marry their parents/siblings when they grow up.

He's just saying how important you are to him in his four year old way.

My ds, 5, tells me i'm his girlfriend and that the manshape is his boyfriend. Because i'm a girl and manshape is a boy.

It's logical in their world.

Aw my little boy used to do this all the time, he said he was going to marry me when he grew up! lol. I think all little boys do this, so cute.

I was starting to find it embarassing in front of people. Don't know how to explain to him that I am his mum and girlfriend is something different. Anyway, thankyou at least it's normal.

You can respond by saying a big cuddly thank you to him and that you love him very much too and really love being friends with him. Would that clarify matters and save you being embarrassed in front of others?

Giddyup · 30/07/2010 19:29

Awwwww DS wanted to marry me from 4-6 ish I spent ages drumming it into him that he could never marry his mummy as I was embarrassed
... it worked, so now he doesn't want to any more . its lovely to be his girlfriend.

TheLifeOfRiley · 30/07/2010 19:32

definately a normal age thing and soo cute and innocent and like deemented says - totally logical to them at their level of understanding

skidoodly · 30/07/2010 19:32

My 2yo DD has been saying for the last few days how she's married to me.

Children just say daft things, I really wouldn't worry about it. It's not embarrassing, it's just funny.

colditz · 30/07/2010 19:34

He on't think you're his girlfriend forever, enjoy it while it lasts. He means he loves you. They don't know what romantic love is, they have only experiences non romantic love.

BambinoBoo · 01/08/2010 18:02

That is the cutest thing ever. I can't wait to be DS' "girlfriend" .

TheMoonOnAStick · 01/08/2010 18:11

"I want mummy be my girlfriend." Aww that is delightful

He sounds a wonderful little chap.

My ds and I are close like that too. Unfortunately at 8 he is suffering the pangs of a little crush towards little girl and doesn't know what on earth to do about it

'I don't like her more than you though mummy..' Phew! Although I guess my days at no.1 might be numbered at the top spot
