Baby Acne :(

Hi there,

DS2 has terrible baby acne/heat rash. He has had it pretty much from birth (day 3 ish) and is 4 weeks old today. He is now just ff and the spots are not getting better - lots of green pussy ones - nice! Despite the lack of nice photos , I am starting to wonder if it could be more sinister than baby acne/heat rash.

Given that he has had this for quite a long time with no improvement, could he have an allergy I should consider? Is there anything I can put on them to improve his skin (not for my benefit, but he scatches them a lot, which leads to bleeding etc).

Any pearls of wisdom would be enormously received, if only to tell me it is normal!

Many thanks

My DS has baby acne for the first few weeks - I didn't wash his face every day, just the eyes, round the mouth and behind the ears. It cleared up by itself. There were no puss spots though.

It could be ezcema caused by a reaction to cow's milk (from the formula) - does he have any other symptoms of allergy, like the sniffles, spitting up, discomfort after a feed, windy etc?

Yes, yes, to all of the above discomforts...will take him to the doctor! Thank you so much for taking the time to reply.

You're welcome. They should be able to prescribe a hypo allergenic formula which will make a massive difference.

My DS had baby acne pretty much from day one and still has it now at 5 months! It is awful to look at espicially when you see other babies smooth clear skin and as you said not great on photos!! My HV prescribed Oilatum to be used at least 4 times a day which has kept it to an acceptable level. I also put socks on his hands at night to stop scratching.

Did not have green puss though - think that is likely to be something else and should def get checked at doctors!

My DS had baby acne from around 2 weeks which was exacerbated by the heat but now at 7 weeks has cleared up without doing anything other than keeping clean and he has lovely baby skin again.
Fantastic - as everyone told me it would last months - you might also get lucky!

my dgs had this really badly[I posted on here] and dd took him to GP who said it would clear on its own.It took a while but be 3 months his face was clear though he still [17 months] has slight eczema which sometimes shows on his face.

OP - my DS had this. I took him to the GP at about 4 weeks old and he was prescribed Doublebase cream. It's a cream that they give to people with excema and other dry skin conditions. It really helped him and I use it every so often on him if the spots come back if he's got heat rash or is irritated by washing powder and other things.

Maybe ask your GP for Doublebase, it really did help!
