Loud noises - too much

My DD is 3yrs 2 mths. Ever since she was a babe she has always reacted to loud noises.

When she was a baby it was if I clapped, she would get startled & might even cry. Then as a toddler if a motorbike or lorry would go past the house or where ever we were she would look frightened & then ask what was that.

Even now if there are loud noises, a neighbour hammering in a garden or what ever, she will run in & covers her ears?

Does any one else's children have this reaction to loud noises?

when i was about the same age i had a bad reaction to loud noises i would pass out, i grew out of it and never found out why, but the man down the rd had amotorbike so it was a pain but i did grow out of it, sorry not much help!

DS has always been like that. My Dad sneezed loudly once and ds was inconsolable for an hour. he's better at dealing with it now (nearly four) but I still warn him about any impending loud noises and he still gets freaked by them.

Have you any other concerns or is it just the noises?

No real other concerns just the noises.

'Bout your Dad sneezing. When my sister and I would go shopping with my mum we would normally walk with her, but my mum has quite a distinctive sneeze. It's bloody loud. So when she was on the build up to her sneeze we would be 30 paces in front of her & would dis-own her until the faces had definitely changed in the crowd.

The same would happen when she started to sing, which is always.

my dd now 13 was exactly the same. If a lorry went past she would scream. Although things like that don't bother her any more she won't go to disco's and hates being in groups where there is lots of noise. i.e sports day, kids fun days etc.

Although it is a pain when they are younger they either grow out of it or learn to deal with it.

Was yours a crying baby henshake by any chance? mine cried for the first 14 weeks just wondering if there is any connection to them being over reactive to things etc.

No not really a crying baby unless she woke up. Whenever she woke up it would be with a scream or immediate crying. However, she has never just gone off to sleep (until recently). We have always had to stay with her until she drops off.

My DD is exactly the same age and is very noise sensitive - she reacts like she is in pain when noise is too much. I try and explain to her what the noise is and she has started getting used to more common noises - I think its just the way her brain is wired.

My DS (age 3) hates noise too....especially if he is watching something on the TV he protests very strongly.

He loves the sound of motorbikes though, however loud they are!!!

My 3 year old daughter does that covering the ears thing now, even when quite a quiet plane flies overhead, etc. I've taken her to the doctor about it and she is currently waiting to see a specialist as they think it might be hypersensitivity.

My daughter has had hearing problems and since her hearing came back she is very easily startled.
