What age did your dc use brakes correctly on a bike/balance bike

Ds, 3.4, has a balance bike and loves it. He is very good at using his feet to slow down and is generally A very cautious boy so no problems so far with the many steep hills around here.

He knows what the brake is for, where it is and how to apply it - he just doesn't know when. He will stop with his feet, press the brake and then shout, "Stop!"

We have tried to teach him to use it properly but to no avail so I just wondered what age was considered 'normal' for this.

Boy got hang of brakes at about 3.6ish, it took a while and he preferred to walk down steep hills for a bit. took some learning on gentle slopes with me or dh jogging along-side.

My DS had a balance bike. Just before 3 he was using the brakes consistently but ALWAYS backed it up by scrapping his feet on the ground.
He's now 3 1/2 and riding a bike independenTly but still will use the brakes with back up of his feet!

About 3,2 years for DS though feet are still used at the same time. Riding downhill and not just on flat helped.

Ds graduated from a balance bike to a pedal bike at around 3.5. He only got the hang of brakes 3 months later. He still does not quite trust it and will also drag his feet on the floor in extremis.

My DD uses the brakes (she's just 3) but I was told by the bike shop owner that usually they only start using the brakes properly from about age 6.

My DS had a balance bike from 2 to 3.5, and then went to a pedal bike with brakes (the balance bike didn't have brakes). It took him a month or two to get used to the brakes, but now, at 4, he's a pro with them.

Ds - 2.5.

Dd - 7!

This is one of thouse skills where there's a wide range of normal!

Dd1 went from balance bike at 3 to her pedal bike with brakes and took about a month or 2 to get the hang of them. Now at 5 she has gears too and knows how to work them better than me!
