Just had my beautiful boy.. dh won't agree on name

Cinderellarach · 07/07/2010 13:28

On sunday evening I had my beautiful son.I had decided to wait and see what he looked like and then name him.

DH loves Calvin and I have always hated it.
We both agreed that we both liked Rocco while pregnant but he doesn't suit it at all now he's born.

A while back on mumsnet I asked for opinions on the name Beau.I'd say 90 percent of mn's hated Beau as did people in RL.

Soon as he was born I couldn't help but think he looked like/suited Beau Alexander. That's his name to me and even the midwives said he looked like a Beau rather than something harsh like Rocco.

DH says he cannot ever call his son Beau.He said it's too much to live up to.He would be ashamed to call out his name in the supermarket etc.

He wants to call our son Kelly or Rocco/Rocky so his taste his hardly normal!!

Our ds1 is 2yrs and called Ellis James(dh named him but I happened to love the name).

At one stage DH said he would consider Beauregard (as it's a proper name)and even though I don't really love it I would still have it as it's the best compromise.
Now he's saying he won't consider Beauregard!

DH still has a week or two left to spend with us.We should be enjoying the baby and family so I'm not bringing up the subject of names as it will end in an argument.

Don't know what to do.Shall I keep trying to get the name I love?DH is very stubborn.Just doesn't seem fair that I'm always the one that gives in to him and he seems to get his own way.

Sorry that this post is so long.
Thanks for reading.

I like Bay Alexander.

Like Beaumont too.

seeker · 12/07/2010 18:54

Kier?

I bet if you call him Samson he'll be Sam as soon as he's got any say in the matter and he'll have to kill anyone who knows what it's short for! So watch out when he reachs teenagerdom...........

LilyBolero · 12/07/2010 19:01

Rocco sounds like a mafia name!

I have the answer for you - Alexander Beau, but instead of shortening to Alex, sorten to Xander (pronounced Zander) which I think is a FAB name, and makes a popular name unusual.

CapitalText · 12/07/2010 19:09

Another vote for Samson Beaumont Alexander

DrivenToDistraction · 12/07/2010 19:10

Raphael Alexander nn Rafe

Like Alexander Beau nn Xander too though.

Samson and Kerry are all asking for teasing and Rocco is very silly IMVHO. Sorry.

thefinerthingsinlife · 12/07/2010 21:15

I have an Alexander who we call Xander and people always comment on it (in a positive way)

BridesheadRegardless · 12/07/2010 21:27

Oh yes Xander short for Alexander is lovely.

Go with that! Alexander Beau.

SpanishHarlot · 12/07/2010 21:35

my niece called her daugher Darcey-Boo i begged her to use Boo as a middle name and not hyphenate it but she wouldn't listen.

it may have worked ok when she was a baby but now she is 5 and hates it. Insists that everyone calls her Darcey

I agree that I sniggered at Beauregard..it is too poncy but Alexander Beau is nice...

sleepingsowell · 12/07/2010 22:21

I think Beau is a great name - gorgeous. Such a shame your DH won't accept it.

Have you tried tears?

mathanxiety · 12/07/2010 23:10

Rocco Alexander -- Fabulous

Samson Beaumont Alexander -- I would vote for it without the Beaumont. Beau would be better.

Kerry Samson -- Kerry is not only a girls' name, but a Kennedy family-type girls' name.

Samson is lovely.
Rocco is lovely.
Alexander is lovely.
Beau is fine, much better than Beaumont.
Kerry is dreadful.

mathanxiety · 13/07/2010 00:56

I put on my thinking cap and came up with:

Rene (maybe too close to Remy, which you decided against earlier?)
Alexis
Aubrey
Asa
Ambrose
Anselm
Blaine
Blaire
Blaise
Avery
Carey
Robin
Reed
Florian
Francis
Shay
Noel
Sage
Lucien
Sidney
Emerson
Justice
Lennox
Lindsay
Leo
Ailbhe
Devlin
Aran
Micah
Morgan

Thanks for comments

Is Bay more acceptable than Beau?

Sleepingsowell-He's now 9 days old.Really thought I had a chance to get the name I love.
I know it sounds really selfish to want to get 'my own way' but DH even admitted he doesn't really like any name! That's why one day he'll come out with:Chester/Archer the next day he'll say he loves Kerry and Kelly.
I said I would consider Kerry. Two days ago he said he loved the name Kerry but last night he said he had changed his mind and that it's silly.

He's making it very difficult.
Sleepingsowell-yes was begging him but haven't actually started crying (yet)!!
He said he would never ever consider it in a million years.
He said this could be the cause of us splitting up.

Mathanxiety-Thankyou so much for the list.

Love Emerson and Reed the most.Nice soft names. Will consider these so thanks again.

Hi Cinderellerach

If you like Samson, why not Samuel? Samuel is IMO a lovely name.

He would just be teased about having his hair cut with the name Samson (I'm sure all girlfriends will be Delilahs).

Dylan is a lovely soft name, IMO.

Cinderellarach · 13/07/2010 14:47

Kathleen123-I think DH wants Samson as ds2 was born with full head of hair!
Also has Biblical connections and I'm RC.
I can imagine the teasing with gf's being Delilahs now you mention it!

Dylan would be an option.Always liked the name.

Also like Finn but worry it's abit meh?

Thankyou

OP posts:
Kathleen123 · 13/07/2010 14:56

No Finn is not meh. I think you need to consider Finn as an adult name, as IMO I think its cute as a boy, but not sure how ti suits an adult.

I'd have Dylan if my hubbie liked it.
Matthew and Edmund are IMO soft sounding names too.

LilyBolero · 13/07/2010 15:03

What do you think of Xander (for Alexander)? I think it is the fabbest nickname - sounds really sophisticated but also sweet, and is 'soft sounds' as well. And he likes Alexander.

I don't like Bay at all, or Kerry/Kelly

bigbluebump · 13/07/2010 15:16

I think the most important thing is that you and dh agree on a name that you both love.

It doesn't matter what we think - some of us love Beau, others love Bay, others again love Alexander. I happen to find Finn boring/dull but love Beau, but that shouldn't matter to the OP... her problem seems to be in coming to an agreement with her dh - they need to broaden their search and find a name they both love!

mathanxiety · 13/07/2010 15:53

How about Fionn ('Fyunn'); Finn is the Anglicised version of this. I think both have a nice soft sound, but Fionn would be more unusual. There's also Finian, Fintan, Fergal, Finbar.

Or
Oisin
Fiacra
Donal
Eamon
Eanna (pr Ay-uh-na, Ay as in 'hay')
Senan
Seadna (pr Shay-uhna)
Feidhlim/ Feilim (pr Fay-lim)

Or Derry/ Daragh?

seeker · 13/07/2010 17:29

5sn't Fionn a girl's name?

Cinderellarach · 13/07/2010 17:43

Fionn is unisex as far as I know!
Thanks mathanxiety!Still like Emerson.I'm sure DH said a few months back that he loved that name and it goes with Ellis!
Will mention this to him when he gets home.(If he decides to come home that is!He stormed out earlier after another 'discussion' about names).

LilyBolero-Xander is nice.Thanks.Could be a name we agree on.

If not then might end up calling him Rocco Alexander.

Hoping to decide by tomorrow.

Thankyou again

P.S.Is Boden a boys name?Is it ridiculous?

OP posts:
Kathleen123 · 13/07/2010 18:01

Sorry I think Boden is too much associated with a catalogue shop.

poppydaisy · 13/07/2010 18:14

Rocco Alexander is lovely.

But you and dh have to love the name. Good luck!

mathanxiety · 13/07/2010 19:11

What on earth is going on with your DH, CinderellaRach? Could he have male PND menshealth.suite101.com/article.cfm/male_post_natal_depression, or issues about becoming well and truly 'settled' now that you have 2 DSs -- does he fear his carefree days are well and truly over, that he's getting old, too many responsibilities?

If he can't settle, is irritable to the point of suggesting your marriage may be over because of this issue, storming off for the day, discussions becoming heated, etc., I have to say I am a bit concerned this may be not so much about the name, but something broader.

(Fionn Mac Cumhaill is Finn McCool of Irish legend -- maybe Ffion, the Welsh girls' name is what you had in mind, Seeker?)
