I'm only 8 weeks pregnant so jumping the gun a little.

Me and DH have had Amelia picked out for a girl for about 7 years. I love this name and I don't care thats its getting more common. However DH has now said that he prefers Phoebe which is my 2nd choice. Which do you prefer?

Boys, I have a Joshua, the only boys name we could agree on. I love Harry and would push for it this time I think. DH did like it but said it was too common, he won't listen when I tell him that Joshua is higher up on the popular babies names list than Harry. I also like Ethan but I'm not sure if I love it. What do you think?

If you also have other similar suggestions, feel free to make them. Girls are pretty easy, we always seem to stuggle with boys names.

Both sweet names. I do prefer Phoebe, though. Amelia is just way too 'zeitgeist' for me.

Joshua is obviously incredibly common (as in popular) but it's because it's a great name! nicer than Harry or Ethan, imo.

weepootle · 02/07/2010 19:47

Amelia is a gorgeous name, I don't care about it's popularity- it's much prettier than Phoebe.

I know loads of Joshua's but no Harry's, go for it.

Both lovely names (Amelia & Harry).

IHeartJohnLewis · 02/07/2010 19:47

I like Amelia, despite its popularity. I think it's a lovely name. I'm not that keen on Phoebe.

I'd steer clear of Joshua because it's not just popular, but has also been appropriated by people wanting to sound posh. Harry, oddly, hasn't. I quite like that one. Ethan is dreadful. Apologies to mothers of Ethans. FWIW, my son has a poncetastic name that gets a regular slating on MN!

londonmackem · 02/07/2010 19:52

I like Amelia a lot bit it is quite popular. I don't like Pheobe at all though it is becoming more popular.
I know more Joshuas than Harrys and prefer Harry.
However, it is not me o mu children that need to live with those names - only you 2 can decide.

DramaInPyjamas · 02/07/2010 19:55

Phoebe and Joshua.

Congratulations btw! x

PlasticCenturion · 02/07/2010 19:58

I think the op has a Joshua.

Phoebe's much nicer than Amelia.

Harry is too ubiquitous, it's just dull now.

IHeartJohnLewis · 02/07/2010 20:14

Ah yes, so I see. I thought she meant it was on her list.

DramaInPyjamas · 02/07/2010 20:20

Haha! Me too.
I thought Joshua was on the list, whereas it clearly says she has one already!
Must read more carefully in future!

mathanxiety · 02/07/2010 21:13

Phoebe gets my vote.

Harry sounds very ordinary to me -- maybe that's what your DH is trying to say too? (Tom, Dick and Harry...)

I dislike Ethan, but I like Nathaniel (but not Nathan).

Suggestions -- Isaac, Daniel, Michael, Samuel.

AngryPixie · 02/07/2010 21:31

4 Phoebe's in my dd year group (y2), but probably as many variants on Amelia

thirtysomething · 02/07/2010 21:40

Love Amelia but also love Emilia as variant or Amalie/Amalia

Agree Phoebe a bit bland and very over-used.

Harry good solid name but v.v.popular...what about: George/Lucas/Noah/Sebastian/Finlay/Theo/Charlie/Jed/Elliott/Alex?

coffeefestival · 02/07/2010 21:48

I like Amelia and Ethan best from your list.

pippylongstockings · 02/07/2010 21:59

Not Ethan sooooo many around.

DetectivePotato · 03/07/2010 10:44

Yes I do have a Joshua, to those who said not to use it. As I said, I can't be bothered to not use a name because of how popular it is, its if I like the name.

I am not as keen on Ethan now tbh so I would take that off the list. Some good suggestions made but DH won't have a name that is in the family or that we already know so that takes off

Sam/Samuel (we know far to many Sam's, male and female which is a shame as its always been my favourite boys name)
James
Daniel
Callum
Lewis
Matthew
Finlay

Alex was on our original list but its not my favourite. I don't want to choose a name I will regret. Don't like Issac, Noah, Elliot, Lucas, Jed, Theo or Charlie (that name holds very bad memories for me).

For a girl I am pretty adamant that I want Amelia, with that spelling. We picked it so long ago, before its current popularity that I know I won't get fed up of it.

Boys are sooooo hard!

I know loads of each and in fact know someone who has a Harry who's just had an Amelia (!)

nowherewoman · 03/07/2010 12:32

I like Josh, but not Joshua for some reason.

LilyBolero · 03/07/2010 12:36

Amelia is lovely, although I think it may become EVEN more popular, because of Dr Who....

DuncanDisorderly · 03/07/2010 12:42

I have an Amelia and a Harry, and one of my twins who was supposed to be a girl was going to be Phoebe, but he turned into a boy.

I hate Ethan with a passion. Go with Amelia and Harry

DetectivePotato · 03/07/2010 14:23

Thanks for the suggestions coffee.

Champagne as I said, I'm not bothered how common they are, its if I like the name.

Nowhere my DS is already called Joshua, and I'm not so keen on Josh.

Lily I don't watch Dr crap Who, is there some bloody association with Amelia now?

Duncan great minds think alike.

LilyBolero · 03/07/2010 20:10

The companion (Amy) 's real name is Amelia Pond, and although she is generally called Amy, Amelia is often used. Especially when it's the younger version!

Just13moreyearstogo · 03/07/2010 20:17

I like Amelia.
From Coffeefestival's list I like Joel. I know loads of Harrys

valiumSingleton · 05/07/2010 08:41

I prefer Phoebe, but Amelia is nice too.
