Middle name for Edith

Hello. I am being a bit nuts here because DH and I are only ttc, but having disagreed on all names forever tonight we suddenly had a brainwav and agreed that we both like two of the names of our grandparents (neither is alive).

So we thought Sidney for a boy (after my granddad) and Edith for a girl (after his grandmother). Clive would be the middle name for a boy (I know it's unfortunate, but it's DH's dad's name and he has always wanted to have it as a middle name, and I think it's such a nice gesture I agree). But what about for a girl? What goes with Edith?

Our surname has two syllables and begins with B.

I like Mary, Jane, Rachel, Felicity, Claire, Grace, Daisy, Hannah and lots of others with Edith! Personally I think the middle name needs to start with a consonant rather than a vowel and I'd avoid other names that end in 'th' e.g. Ruth.

Harriet, Mekussa, Leona, Lucy, Kathleen, Rebecca, Lauren, Helen

cityangel · 29/06/2010 00:14

oops Melissa not Mekussa

My immediate thought is Louisa, after Edith Louisa Cavell. Think Rebecca, Susannah, Julia, Lavinia, and Maria would all work well, too.

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 29/06/2010 00:27

My daughter is Edith Clare. I think Louisa is lovely, too. I don't think you want a two syllable middle, too bouncy with the two-syllable first and surnames, so Felicity is also good.

And I commend your taste.

All the Ediths in my family are Edith Ruth . Also try: Edith Josephine, Edith Lydia, Edith Louisa, Edith Marisa, Edith Naomi...

Ooh thank you everyone! I really like Edith Felicity - my SIL is called Nicola Joy and I think it was lovely that her parents gave her a middle name that shows how happy they were to have her! (Though Joy was deeply unfashionable in 1987, when she was born!)

I was also thinking of Edith May and Edith Rose. Just got AF after 53 days (was stilling hoping last night I was pg) so on my long and unpredictable post-pill cycles if I was lucky next cycle I'd prob be due in May. Edith Louisa is a good name because of the precedent. Good tip SE13.

And thanks tortoise!

[lol at 'Mekussa' - wondered why i'd never heard of that!]

I'll try these out on DH later

PS - I love Matilda but DH not so keen, the other way round for Belle - so they're good options for middle names ...

Lots of ideas here. Thanks!

I think Edith May is lovely

FiveGoMadInDorset · 29/06/2010 08:28

DD is Edith Eleanor Mary

flopsy1974 · 29/06/2010 09:21

Edith Rose sounds lovley to me

Hedwig3 · 29/06/2010 10:20

Is there not another family name?

Kathleen123 · 29/06/2010 10:31

Love Edith.

I like Edith May best.

Re Sidney - I like. Although I suspect it will be shortened to Sid? I'm afraid I don't like Sid at all. Just my opinion.

takethatlady · 29/06/2010 10:32

There are other family names, of course, but we both like Edith (I'm guessing you don't hedwig ) and it is after my DH's lovely gran who died four months after we got married. Our other grans are called Josie (which we also like, but she's still alive and she's craaaazzzy) and on my side, Iris Winifred and Janet Pamela - none of which we can bear!

Thanks Kathleen, cross-posted there. I love Edith May too. I'm just doing the hoovering before I go to work and Edith May is really growing on me as I push the vacuum round the house! It's my current fave.

I prefer Sid to Sidney, so we're alright there

Edith Mary

Hedwig3 · 29/06/2010 10:37

No no, I think Edith is lovely

I meant to use as a middle name, like you have Clive for a boy!

takethatlady · 29/06/2010 10:45

Oh! Possibly. I suppose if we wanted symmetry we could use my mum (so my granddad, his dad, and his grandmother, my mum) - which is Karrie, though I'd soften it to Carrie. Will ponder on that ...

Edith vetoed by DH otherwise DD2 would have been one.

I liked:
Edith Elizabeth
Edith Emily
Edith Sophie
Edith Clare
Edith Emery

Goes with anything really!

RobynLou · 29/06/2010 12:48

can I do a mini hijack? I LOVE Edith but SIL has a baby called Meredith - Edith is a shortening of Meredith, is it too similar to consider?

takethatlady · 29/06/2010 12:51

Oooh hijack away - I like Meredith! I don't think it's too similar because the stress is not on the 'ee' as it is in Edith, and as it starts with something different it's like a whole different ball park. I say go for it!

I shall see if DH can be convinced and then mention it to SIL to gauge her reaction!
