Love the name Moses. Can't find any threads on it. Any nasty Moseses or dodgy nicknames you can think of. But please be quite gentle as I'm 38 weeks and we haven't got a shortlist even.

I don't like it much. And as for Gwyneth Paltrow's Moses Martin!? That sounds terrible. I love alliteration, mostly. Gracie Galvin, Polly Price.... it can sound great. But Moses Martin..

What about Saul a great underused bible name.

Moses is quite a heavy name to carry imo. I picture him coming down from the mountain with his ten commandments!

PuppyMonkey · 26/06/2010 11:15

Moses supposes his toes-es is roses but Moses supposes erroneously.

It's a big name to live up to. Are you religious?

horatia · 26/06/2010 12:10

I like it.

LooL00 · 26/06/2010 14:12

No we're not really religous puppymonkey and we've already got DC1 with and old testament name and that's what puts me off a bit. But we're desperate for a boys name. Gwyneth P has put me right off Magalyxyz thanks for telling me.Our surname begins with s so not Saul.Maybe it'll be a girl.

Is your DS1 Caleb by any chance? If not, that's another lovely biblical name. Amos is similar to Moses and nicer, IMO.

Moses was quite a popular name amongst really old people in the part of Ireland where my mum grew up. Those Moses's would have been born in the 1880s to 1900.

LooL00 · 26/06/2010 19:22

We actually don't want another old test name, what I meant was I like Moses despite that problem. On the very short list are Xavier, Kit and Robin. Is Xavier biblical?
Thanks for all your help. Our girls shortlist is Flora Scarlett and Louisa.

I really like Moses, much more so than the very popular Noah. Kit and especially Robin are fab too.

ZZZenAgain · 26/06/2010 21:34

don't know any nasty Moses. (Don't actually know any in RL). Don't know of a dodgy nick. Wouldn't have thought of it for my own dc tbh but it is ok

mybootsaremuddy · 26/06/2010 22:21

Xavier is FAB
It is of Basque/Spanish origin and means 'the new house; Bright.
There was a 16th century missionary called saint Francis Xavier. Apparently the name is quite popular amoung Roman catholics.
I didnt know this when me and xh chose the name for our DS(age 8). I only found out when visiting some of DHs relitives in US they all assumed i was catholic (im not neither is xh). No one in Uk has pointed this out and we usualy just get 'oh how lovely' or 'thats different' (in a nice way) comments.

luciemule · 26/06/2010 22:28

Love Moses but yes, quite a name to live up to.

Love Xavier (popular in france) and love your girls name of Flora.

annasophia · 26/06/2010 22:36

I quite like Moses. Translates well into other languages. And no, I don't know any nasty ones.

violethill · 26/06/2010 22:57

I do like Moses

BUT

you say your surname begins with 'S' which just won't work with Moses - too many 's' sounds. Try saying it aloud.

ALSO

do you really imagine the other little boys will be shouting 'Moses' across the school playground.
Er, no, they'll be yelling 'Oi, Mo!' Not so good eh?

diplodoris · 26/06/2010 23:01

I like Louisa best from your girls' choices

hester · 26/06/2010 23:05

Love Moses

Also Louisa.

mathanxiety · 27/06/2010 04:15

I love Louisa too.

Xavier was St. Francis Xavier's surname his mother was an aristocrat and he took her name as was the custom of the time. Her name came from her family's ancestral lands he was Francisco de Xavier in Spanish originally. So not biblical.

Deemented · 27/06/2010 14:27

We very nearly went with Seth Elijah for ds - he was even called it for about ten mins... but then it just didn't suit him.

Love Moses.

Can i just ask - Flora??? Really? all those 'spreads easily' connotations...

LooL00 · 28/06/2010 10:30

Still struggling! Dh thinks Xavier is too poncy, we both think Kit is too short and don't like the name Christopher. Other rejects were Clement, and Fabian. So at the moment Robin is in the lead. My dc want to call the babe Rosie if it is a girl but we're not sure about it.

I know two Moses, both from Uganda.

I wanted Keir (as in Hardie) but we have Alexander.

Kathleen123 · 28/06/2010 11:44

I dont like the name Moses.
