Can I use Tabitha as a girls name or is it only suitable for a cat?

I love it. I think it's a beautiful name. Yes, it's commonly used for cats, but it's still really nice for a girl/woman. If I was having a girl I'd certainly want it on the list.

I don't associate Tabitha with cats at all. I think it's a lovely gentle sounding name.
When my sis wanted to call her son Casper 20+ years ago that was a different thing entirely- visions of one of those scowly white windowsill furballs!

clpsmum · 17/06/2010 13:53

yes you can use it an di love that name but to be honest as soon as i saw the title of this thread i thought it will either be felix or tabitha. I love the name tabitha but infortunatley people do associate it with cats, that's their lookout though not yours xx

Poohbearsmom · 17/06/2010 15:59

I think its lovely
ppl dont use it as much now for cats as they did id say? I think your dd's friends your family and friends will all think of her when they hear the name never a cat!

diplodoris · 17/06/2010 17:15

Sorry but I don't like it at all, and think "cat" straight away.

EasilyConfusedIndith · 17/06/2010 17:21

I love it and would use it like a shot. Dd would have been one if dh had allowed.

Magalyxyz · 17/06/2010 17:25

I hate Tabitha. Not only too feline, but too witchy. I thought you were going to say Felix, which I love.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 17/06/2010 17:29

sorry, I don't like it. I agree with diplodoris

LetThereBeRock · 17/06/2010 19:23

I'm with Diplodoris too. I really dislike the name and wouldn't use it for a human, though I'm aware that many do.

Limpopo · 17/06/2010 19:34

It's my DDs middle name. Needless to say I love it

randomimposter · 17/06/2010 19:55

I have 5 cats (and have cremated/buried 5 more), and have never had one called Tabitha . Doesn't sound like a cat name to me.

BUT rather spookily there was a little girl at playgroup only today called Tabitha and I commented how lovely and unusual it was. I think it's very nice... could be Bibi as a NN if you were concerned about Tabby...

Lovely name. I love Dinah too. I have nothing against cats either..

telsa · 18/06/2010 12:33

what's wrong with cats? Do people worry about the name Kitty too? It's a lovely name.

annasophia · 18/06/2010 13:11

Not too bothered by the cat association, but find the name very 'English' and difficult to pronounce in most other languages (who don't pronounce the 'th').

JackieNo · 18/06/2010 13:14

I'd never heard of it connected with cats until I read this thread! But it does make me think of 'Bewitched', but in a good way - I like it a lot.

LaserWidow · 19/06/2010 20:49

There are lots of names used for children now that I associate with horses - but they are lovely names which you identify the child with when you get used to (if it needs getting used to).

It seems a shame to waste some lovely names on pets only - go for it if you like it and don't bother what it might be associated with in the minds of other people.

Unless it's Tiddles. That would be a bit odd.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 22/06/2010 22:55

i like it, it is a cat's name but then I also like felix...and I like rufus even though it is clearly a dog's name
