Thoughts on Clarence please?
I rather like it, although it is rather similar to my own name, does that matter do you think.
Also does it go with 2 quite uncommon Old Testament names?
Thanks!

Well, you need to tell me what the other names are before I can say if Clarence goes or not.....but it's not a bad name.

tummytickler · 12/06/2010 19:21

Eli and Amos are my other 2 boys.

As soon as I saw the name I knew it'd be you.

I really don't like it.

thisisyesterday · 12/06/2010 19:23

i don't think it "goes" with the 2 old biblical names
I also don't think that's a problem in the slightest.
they are not always going to be known as Eli, Amos and Clarence.
pick a name because you like it, n ot because it "goes" with the other names. He'll be a person of his own... and it doesn't matter if his name matches his brothers'

Pfishofplight · 12/06/2010 19:53

I really don't like it. It's a daft name for a boy.

lidofabiro · 12/06/2010 20:03

Prefer Clifford or Lawrence.

CantSupinate · 12/06/2010 20:08

I am struggling to warm to it, tbh. I would say it goes with the others ok, though.

janeite · 12/06/2010 20:08

I don't like it and don't think it 'goes' at all, sorry.

How about Bartholomew/Bartie, Thaddeus or Gideon?

LaDiDaDi · 12/06/2010 20:09

I don't like it; too close to Clarice for me though I like Clarice.

LaDiDaDi · 12/06/2010 20:09

Gideon is good.

Just13moreyearstogo · 12/06/2010 20:13

Fine for an old man, not great for a little boy IMO.

DownyEmerald · 12/06/2010 20:13

It doesn't go with Eli and Amos, (and I don't like it, but I guess you do .

I love all Janeite's suggestions.

MrsSeanBean · 12/06/2010 20:19

Other Old Testament names:

Ezra
Nahum
Job
Solomon
Nimrod (I like )
David
Jonathan
Eli
Moses
Noah
Ishmael
Benjamin
Samuel
Isaac
Esau
Jacob
Joseph
Reuben
Elkanah (also quite like, but I am wierd )

tummytickler · 12/06/2010 20:25

MrsSeanBean - I have an Eli already! Love Moses but a bit too Gwynneth Paltrow and Ishmael. Both Dh's names are there, and ELi's middle name is there. So i like your list! .

Janeite - I LOVE Gideon, have loved it for ages.

Well, I think it is great And I think it goes perfectly well with the other names.

I remember that there was an (extremely incidental and fleeting) character in Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder, I LOVED the name as a child when I first read it there.

Might be a difficult name to shorten (which isn't necessarily a bad thing)

MrsSeanBean · 12/06/2010 20:30

Oops sorry tummytickler - got a bit carried away there with my list!

CantSupinate · 12/06/2010 20:30

Gabriel .

MrsSeanBean · 12/06/2010 20:33

Ooh yes, Gabriel's a great suggestion. Also Raphael, Melchizidek, Michael, Caspar, Melchior, Silas... although now we are straying into New Testament territory.

janeite · 12/06/2010 20:47

Silas is horrible, imho. Sorry.

mathanxiety · 12/06/2010 20:49

Prefer Clement, by a long shot. Clarence belongs with a name like Aloysius, a very old-fashioned Catholic name.

Nathaniel
Asa
Asher
Barnabus
Zachariah
Isaiah
Josiah

ThatVikRinA22 · 12/06/2010 20:51

not keen on clarence. sorry.

what about caleb? good biblical name. or any of the other suggestions!

MrsSeanBean · 12/06/2010 20:51

A few more:

Levi
Judah
Gamaliel
Caleb
Saul...?

janeite · 12/06/2010 20:52

I like Asher.

DD1 might well have been Laurence Asher, had she been ds.

Love Barnabus too.

MrsSeanBean · 12/06/2010 20:52

x posts Vicar!

CakeandRoses · 13/06/2010 00:17

Another no for Clarence here too sorry.

My sister's cat is a Clarence....

For me it's one of those real but wacky names that you can safely name pets, knowing that no-one else in your family will ever want to use it for a DC!
