Thoughts? Also like Theodora.

Not mad on Dorothy, but Dorothea is nice and could be shortened to Thea. Whereas Dorothy will always be Dot or Dorrie or Dotty.

winnybella · 10/06/2010 13:23

Dorothea is lovely.

Lakota · 10/06/2010 13:26

My aunt is Dorothy and has always been known as 'Doll' (Dolly when a child), never Dot. I think both are quite nice and a bit unusual these days.

tummytickler · 10/06/2010 13:50

I love Dorothy - ds was going to be Dorothy, but it didn't suit him!
Dorothea is nice too, but i am going through a plainer name thing at the moment (can you tell i overthink these things )

Hedwig3 · 10/06/2010 14:09

LOVE Dorothy

dotty2 · 10/06/2010 14:18

I wanted to call DD1 Dorothea (Middlemarch fan) but was over-ruled by DH. On the whole am quite pleased. Can you imagine shouting it across a crowded park? If not, don't.

Could we be in for a rash of Over The Rainbow inspired Dorothy-s, do you think?

I am a Dorothy in my thirties and have never come across another my age. I am completely fine with the name now but as a child I longed to have something more 'normal' and used to ask my mother to call me Nicola or Tracy. In the 70's and 80's it realy was an old lady name and I used to dread introductions as it was always commented on, not always in a complementary way I might add. I used to get called Dottie and Dot and still do, like I say fine with it now and it makes me smile that it is comming back around again but for anyone choosing an unusual name for the time kids can be cruel, there were many tears shed over my name!

lidofabiro · 10/06/2010 17:05

Theodora is lovely. Quite like Dorothy, but not so keen on Dorothea.

SillyTillyBilly · 10/06/2010 19:36

Dorothy will be the new Ruby, you mark my words! I love it, think it is a gorgeous name and if ds had been a dd2 he would have been Dorothy or Daphne.

But I do seem to have this knack of choosing names that suddenly everyone else goes for. My dc names were fairly unusual in the years they were born - now they are just about the most common you can get!

Fink · 10/06/2010 19:48

Dorothea's my middle name. Never met another one (am in late 20s) and everyone can spell it, bonus!

Agree with dotty2 about park - but I didn't just imagine it, actually went to a playground and called names out to the (as yet unborn) child, helped me to rule out a few!

MamaLazarou · 10/06/2010 19:52

Dorothy is an excellent name. Lovely nicknames Dottie/Dot and Dolly. Can't think of anything wrong with Dorothy at all.

ExitPursuedByABear · 10/06/2010 19:53

Loving Dorothea.

missgenevieveclavel · 10/06/2010 20:07

I'd just like to compliment you on your exquisite taste!

I am a 44 yr old Dorothy and never knew anyone of my age with the same name (still don't, actually). People generally seemed to comment that it was a 'maiden aunt' type name. I longed for a trendy name, like Nicola or Stacy.

I never allowed it to be abbreviated btw,(simply refused to answer).

I now feel absurdly flattered for some strange reason!

Hedwig3 · 11/06/2010 11:41

Dorothy has so many lovely nicknames.

FranSanDisco · 11/06/2010 11:49

I like Dorothy

diddl · 11/06/2010 14:03

suspiria · 11/06/2010 17:50

Theodora is such a lovely name.I know a 2 year old with this name.I like Dorothea, but I know an 18 month old and she is always called Dotty, which I don't like.I am not a fan of Dorothy.

LetThereBeRock · 11/06/2010 18:47

I'm not so fond of Theodora but Dorothy is lovely.

sarah291004 · 05/08/2010 20:24

My one year old daughter is called Dorothy, we named her after my Grandmother and because we already have an Emily age 5 (very common name!) we wanted something that would go with Emily but be a bit more unique yet easy to say/spell. My parents hated it (lots of tears post natally but are getting used to it now, people are very divided and either think its fab or really dreadful! She's called Dottie for short which is really cute and not so "granny". Maybe we'll see more Dotties in the near future!

AT1137 · 15/08/2010 09:30

I love Dorothy as a name, that is going to be my baby's middle name if it pops out a girl. In honour of a nurse who looked after my 4 year old son when he was in hospital.
