Matilda or Sophia?

Hello,

I would love some advice on baby girl names. I'm due any day now and can't decide between Matilda or Sophia... with the middle name Rose.

My surname is Lally, so if we go with Matilda and it's shortened to Tillie (which we also love)...will Tillie Lally be too much of a mouthful?!

LOVE Mathilda, ADORE Sophia! Mathilda is on my list for possible future DD. Sophia was on the list for last DD (only off it now because it's quite similar to the name we chose).

Because of your surname, I'd definitely go with Sophia. I think Tillie Lally sounds too much like Dilly Dally or something.

Best of luck for the birth

Sophia is lovely and fits better with your surname. Personally I'm not so keen on Matilda.

ItalyLovingMummy · 08/06/2010 19:47

Mathilda is really cute, but love Sophia and its a name that still sounds good when your child is grown up too.

Helokitty · 08/06/2010 21:18

Personally, I think Sophia is much nicer than Matilda.

DomesticG0ddess · 09/06/2010 09:25

Love both, but Tillie Lally? Sounds like a programme on CBeebies. I have a bit of a problem with our surname too.

Tubbilicious · 09/06/2010 09:32

I like both but agree that Tillie Lally will be too much. Sophia Rose is very pretty for a little girl and elegant when she grows up

5DollarShake · 09/06/2010 09:41

Sophia for me. Sophia Rose sounds lovely and goes much better with your surname.

FranSanDisco · 09/06/2010 09:44

I like both names. Tilly Lally is better than Lilly Lally which makes me want to sing 'don't dilly dally on the way'. Sorry I'll be orf now

Hedwig3 · 09/06/2010 12:39

Love Matilda, Sophia is not my cup of tea.

Do nicknames generally get used with a surname?

IWouldNotCouldNotWithAGoat · 09/06/2010 18:16

Sophia better. Tilly Lally?

Maria101 · 09/06/2010 21:13

Thank you so much for all your advice! I'm leaning heavily towards Sophia, but my husband LOVES Matilda and has been calling the bump Tillie for months now, so I feel mean taking it away from him! I'm trying to negotiate Sophia Matilda, or Rose Matilda! x

Sophia is the best name every (my dd is a Sophia - it is a beatiful name, but then I would say that!!)

muminthemiddle · 10/06/2010 13:17

Sophia is much nicer.

mumwhereareyou · 10/06/2010 13:55

Love both names and have a Matilda and Sophia as DDs middle names. Although agree that with your surname would go with Sophia.

ShowOfHands · 10/06/2010 14:00

Sophia goes better with your surname and is very pretty. But I have a Mathilda so prefer that. I can't abide Tilly/ie. It's twee, uber popular and Mathilda has other much better abbreviations. Ours is Tilda but there's the lovely Mattie too. Sounds like in dh's head she's already named!

Saartjie · 10/06/2010 14:13

I love Matilda. I want that for our girl but DH doesn't like it. I think it is a lovely name.

Maria101 · 10/06/2010 17:48

How about Sophia Matilda? That way, my husband can call her Tillie (my dad has alway called me by a nickname) and we both (kind of) get our way!

Matilda for me

Matilda for me

Tubbilicious · 11/06/2010 16:26

Yeah, I like Sophia Matilda - it is a good option and suits you and the DH. Showofhands had some good alternative nicknames if you decide to go for Matilda Rose and she doesn't like Tilly Lally... Tilda Lally. Good luck with the birth and choosing names!!!

Maria101 · 17/06/2010 18:11

We went with Sophia Matilda! Thanks for all your help and advice x
