What do MNetters think of Tobias, nn Toby?

It looks like it's getting more popular, but I don't personally know any. We've gone round the houses with names (this is DS2) and we both like it, but would love to know what other people who haven't spent the last 6 months discussing it think!

We're thinking of Isaac or Paul as a middle name (we have an unusual surname).

Thanks!

Love both, DS2 was going to have the name but DH went off it in the last month. We had two clear favourites anyway, so I was quite happy with either, but still love Toby and Tobias.

I really like Toby. Not quite as keen on Tobias but it's very popular here in Austria (DS's best friend is called Tobias). In the highly unlikely event that we had a fourth, I would consider Toby (possibly with Tobias as the "full"/Austrian version) if it wasn't so similar to DS's name.

I like Toby but not Tobias so that put me off - Toby could've gone on the BC but it felt a little nn rather than full name IYSWIM.

Mind you, DH said no straight away so I didn't exactly spend time fretting over it!

Tobias is my brother's MN, given to him because my parents didn't want Toby, but my granddad was adamant. I think I'll use it as a MN to keep it in the family, but it is very popular nowadays.

Not too keen, sorry.

Toby is quite nice, but I don't like Tobias.

thanks everyone!

Good to know it's not universally hated.... very exciting to think this is sorted with 2 weeks to go.

I think it's beautiful, I really do and it's my brother's name (he's only 15) and he loves the choice of being a Toby or a Tobias.. Toby is great for when he's younger and when he's with his friends, and Tobias is great for when he's older. I will tell you something though, from the day he was born, he has always been 'Tobs' - it just slips out!

Manda25 · 11/06/2010 19:07

Toby is my sons name (just Toby)....and 8 yrs later i still LOVE it. We also call him Tobs or Tobe as a nn.
Funnily i also call him Tobias as a nn but i do this with him brother who's name is Jake but i call him Jacob sometimes (usually when i am calling him!!)

allyfe · 11/06/2010 20:30

I actually prefer Tobias. Toby I'm not so keen on.

MrsSeanBean · 12/06/2010 20:59

Tobias. You can always use Toby as a nickname, but best to have the 'full' version as official name IMO.

skymonkey · 12/06/2010 21:08

I've got a Toby, not keen on the name Tobias. He gets called Tobes a lot, or T, or T-boy
