If current pregnancy turns up a boy then he's going to be called Charles Martin Surname. These are the remaining two names of my and DH's grandparents - the first two were used on DS1!!

My only worry with Charles is that presumiably at some point in DS2's life Elizabeth II will die and King Charles will be crowned.... and I think he's going to be unpopular as people seem to want it to go straight to William....!

Is this a rational worry?... that my potential DS2 will be affected by this? FWIW I don't like Charlie as a nn....

Not sure the King Charles thing would worry me greatly. It's a classic name that will outlast any association with the current Prince Charles.
However I wouldn't name a child Charles if I didn't like Charlie as a nn. Even if you don't use it, you'll be hard pressed to stop friends, family and your ds himself using it.

I like the name Charles. I know people called Charles who don't get called Charlie. They (or their parents) must have vetoed the nickname when they were younger.

I knew a Charles who insisted an Chas as a NN.... actually it really suited him. (Just DON'T think of Chas n Dave and you'll be fine).

Wouldn't worry about the royal link. (And that's from someone with a William, and a (largely unsaid) pressure to honour a father-in-law called Charles Harry if any future DSs.... )

I have a Charles (actually is Charles Henry!), he insists on Charlie unfortunately now he is 11 - reinforced by dh who has always called him Charlie.

Thanks everyone - you're right about the timelessness of the name...

Will cross the Charles/Charlie bridge when we come to it....!

I think Charles, Prince of Wales will surprise people and make a very good king- he's not unpopular these days anyway and, but the time Elizabeth goes, he'll have days to do anyway. And...he plans to use George out of respect and love for his maternal grandfather who was actually Albert....

People who meet him tend to be bowled over and thats what matters, not what the papers say.

So its more likely he'll be George VII. And I think its a great name. I've known it shortened to Charle as well, which was kind of sweet.

Elsa123 didn't know that about probably being called George VII - sounds a bit random to me. Useful for a pub quiz m'thinks...
