I like Bella a lot. We've got Isabella and she gets called Bella. Lovely name, classic, v.feminine, but strong at the same time.

Quite popular around here and know about three or four. Also my dad wanted to call me Arabella / Bella but it wouldn't have worked with our surname (my mum didn't like the name)

I think it's a lovely name and has lots of possible shortenings if it's too much of a name (Arabella that is)

Would you have it as a nickname for something longer, such as Isabella, Annabella, Corabella, Maribella?

Report
sunndydays · 04/06/2010 19:44

No, just Bella

I think it is quite nice, years ago it was a name we considered but as a NN. I am not familiar with Twilight so this would not be something I would worry about!

My daughter is Isabella and we said from the start that if it was to be shortened it was to be Bella and not Izzy. I'll be honest and say it caused a fair few comments when we said it. A reasonable amount of people really didn't like it (some still don't) and we got all sorts of comments about it - "it's an old woman's name", "it's a dog's name" or even just "it's a horrible name"! It did get me down a bit - some people just laughed at the name which wasn't nice at all. We were able to fall back on her full name though and tell people that if they didn't like it - don't use it! Some people have really taken to it though and call her Bella all the time - never using Isabella! I love Bella - but just as a nickname - for instance I use Bella when I'm calling her/talking to her, but more often than not I do call her by her full name and would certainly always use her full name when talking about her or signing her name!

Emberg.

I really like it! I do remember Bella Emberg though, and I wonder if that's why I seem to know more Izzys than Bellas. Bella is prettier jmo.

(especially pronounced with an accent like in fireman Sam!!)

Love Bella. I don't think it needs to be short for anything as it is lovely just as it is

Report
lidofabiro · 05/06/2010 10:43

I'm not too keen on it as a name if not short for something, sorry. Looks like I'm in the minority though.

Love it.

I only know one, age 9, lovely girl too.

I love it thinking of it for DD myself for other reasons hadn't thought about the twilight reference, Bella shortened to Belle

Honeywitch · 15/06/2010 12:13

I think it's beautiful, and tbh the Twilight reference is not a problem - Bella is a strong and moral heroine, so why would that be a problem?

My cat is called Sabella, which I always wanted to call a baby girl, but I'd actually given up on children, so used it on her! I'll have to find another lovely name if this surprise prgenancy is a little girl!

I love it. My dh's grandma is called ella (isabella) and we've always said if we have a girl that's what we'll call her. Think we'd go for Isabella but call her bella

We already have a 3 year old ds called jake (Jacob james).

And no we're not copying off twilight lol!

I love it, it's one of my favourite names, but we have rejected it because it is very popular in various forms: Isabelle, Isabella, Belle, etc.

Same with Olivia, Georgia and so many names I like. Girls names are so hard!

hollyoaks · 08/07/2010 09:59

Love it, though we shorten our Isabella to Belle which I think is equally as gorgeous.

AlCrowley · 08/07/2010 10:04

There's a very obvious nickname she'll get a school that I wouldn't be keen on!

Love Isabella. Also she may want to use Isabella or Isabel when shes older. Not sure if Bella suits someone in their 40s.

I've also heard Annabella.
