The Anya i know who is 3 is referred to as Annie almost exclusively...

sapell3 · 26/05/2010 23:14

I like it.

bibbitybobbityhat · 26/05/2010 23:16

Love it

JimmyTarbuck · 26/05/2010 23:16

I like it, but then I am a Russophile I would have to insist on the short vowelled Anya (not Aaanya) though.

narmada · 26/05/2010 23:17

I love it, wanted it for DD1 but DP didn't like it.

ThatVikRinA22 · 26/05/2010 23:18

i love anya, way more than annie which im not that keen on.

anya gets a thumbs up from me.

BitOfFun · 26/05/2010 23:18

I like it a lot. I have a relative called this. Reminds me a bit of the Body Shop perfume that we all wore as as teenagers . But that's not a bad thing.

winkle2 · 27/05/2010 10:29

what about Anaya instead?

Hedwig3 · 27/05/2010 10:29

I like this name but it does make me think of potatoes

ShinyAndNew · 27/05/2010 10:30

Love it. I wanted it for dd2 but dh would not let me.

GiraffeYoga · 27/05/2010 11:41

had it on our list but knocked it off due to potato links.

Anna is lovely though.

mopsyflopsy · 27/05/2010 12:24

Anya is lovely.

Anya is no more related to potatoes than Charlotte .

notalone · 27/05/2010 12:26

I have always loved Anya. Think it is french but I may be wrong. It is a beautiful name and unusual without being odd or too quirky

mopsyflopsy · 27/05/2010 12:27

Anya was a very popular German girls name in the 70s, a bit like Clare in the UK.

I think it is nicer than Anna.

Songbird · 27/05/2010 12:27

Mmnn, lovely, makes me think of Buffy though

Someone in my family is called Anya too and I love the name.

People can't spell it though bless em..Annie, Anja etc etc

Tis Russian/Polish also Anjelica (I think)

FourLittleDucks · 27/05/2010 12:59

Our DD4 was nearly Anya, sometimes I call her it - but husband vetoed it, and to be honest after 3D's with slightly unusual names it was a bit of a relief to go for something that didn't need explaining ! So we have Anna instead, which is also beautiful !
But go for it - I like it because it is elegant and yet character-ful

Rubena · 27/05/2010 14:21

like it

helyg · 27/05/2010 14:25

My friend's eldest is called Anya and I think its lovely.

ShinyAndNew · 27/05/2010 14:58

AppleTreeWick, Anja is a proper way of spelling it, as a shortening of Anjanka.

I am not sure where the name originated from, but I wanted dd2 to be named after someone from my Gran's side of the family, who all come from Slovenia.

MagalyZz · 27/05/2010 16:42

I really like it. It's a pet form isn't it? the way we might shorten any name starting with Anne or Anna to Annie, the russians might shorten it to Anya.

It's lovely.

MagalyZz · 27/05/2010 16:43

JimmyTarbuck, have you heard how they pronounce Ana on desperate housewives (if you watch it!) they all say Onna. Really odd.

MagalyZz · 27/05/2010 16:44

Potatoes??? Julienne is potatoes!!
