Eileen - is it really that bad?

have seen it slated on here and just want to check it's still as frowned upon as before

if dh and I had another baby and it was a girl, Eileen would be a strong contender - I love it and it reminds me of green velvet and fiddle music

is it still considered awful?

I think it's a nice name.

flimflammum · 25/05/2010 16:20

Eileen? Oh, come on!

sorry

TheFatOwlOfTheRemove · 25/05/2010 16:20

would you like to elaborate flimflam? It is a bona fide girls' name!

Annabelsmummie · 25/05/2010 16:21

I think it's pretty.

said · 25/05/2010 16:21

I'm saying it out loud and still wrinkling my nose. No.

pinkmagic1 · 25/05/2010 16:23

I think its taking the old lady name thing to the extreme really, but then it was my step Nans name. Don't like it, sorry.

TheFatOwlOfTheRemove · 25/05/2010 16:24

Is it an old lady name? I knew three kids when I was little called Eileen, Philomena and Patrick, and I always envied Eileen's name. I'm only 32!

Chuckles at flimmlammum well, that was all I clicked to say, really - and you beat me to it.

You could have Tooloorye-a as a mn!

I have to say I am not keen on the name, but it's not as bad as some.

If you love it, use it!

I had an aunty Eileen and know a few in late 40s/early 50s. Shania Twain is really Eileen.

waitingforbedtime · 25/05/2010 16:27

I dont like it that much but think Aileen is nice.

tammytoby · 25/05/2010 16:28

I quite like it, actually.

swanandduck · 25/05/2010 16:28

I have a lovely Goddaughter called Eileen and I still HATE the name.

heading4home · 25/05/2010 16:29

I think it's a pretty name which has been utterly, utterly ruined by the awful song.

Maybe in another 10 years?

skidoodly · 25/05/2010 16:32

Eileen Over and Ulick Magee

that's what it makes me think of

mathanxiety · 25/05/2010 16:32

Eilidh is much nicer, imo.

DD1 had an Eileen in her class and That Song was her theme music.

How about Evelyn or Evaline? Or Eibhlin, which can be pronounced with the V sound or as Eileen?

shumway · 25/05/2010 16:33

I like the name and I like the song

LetThereBeRock · 25/05/2010 16:33

I think it's a very ugly name, and it instantly makes me think of that horrid song.

thumbwitch · 25/05/2010 16:35

pmsl at thefatowl - did you really not get it?

I loathe Eileen. And Maureen. I had an auntie called one and my mum was called the other - doesn't matter, I loved my mum and didn't like the auntie but can't stand either name.

emmyloo2 · 25/05/2010 16:37

What about Eleanor?

I am not a big fan of Eileen to be honest.

TheFatOwlOfTheRemove · 25/05/2010 16:37

no, I didn't!

I have an Auntie Maureen and I adore her, but hate her name

I love Eileen though!

My grandmother (dad's mom) is Eileen, she hates it.

My mom is Aileen and hates it so much she has always used her middle name and bollox anyone who dares uses her first name.

It's a horrible name, sorry.

autodidact · 25/05/2010 16:43

Are there any nice names ending in "een"? I hate Doreen, Noreen, Maureen, Irene, Eileen...

LetThereBeRock · 25/05/2010 16:43

For Fatowl

4andnotout · 25/05/2010 16:44

My nan is called Eileen, I quite like it but prefer Aileen.

thumbwitch · 25/05/2010 16:49

I can just about cope with Aileen - but other than that I agree with autodidact.

They sound better if there is an 'a' on the end - Sheena, Irina etc.

Corinne can be pronounced Correen - don't mind that one too much
Aisling is pronounced Ashleen, that's ok
Roisin is pronounced Rosheen, that's ok

Any of those any good, TheFatOwl?
