Help! Due on Thursday and still not decided.

Help please! I'm due on Thursday, don't know if it's a boy or a girl and we apparently need a name before we leave hospital (we live abroad atm). I'm getting a bit frantic. Our older DC have lovely names but they have, for different reasons, become unbelievably popular, and we want to try to avoid anything too ubiquitous for DC3.

We have a shortlist but am open to other names in the same vein. So what do you think of these names? Or combinations of these for middle names?

Boy:
Gabriel
Pierce
Angus
Fionn
Fergus
Oscar (tho' worried that there seem to be lots of them about)

Girl:
Florence
Flora
Mary
Clementine (good chance or ginger hair so a wait-and-see scenario)
Gertrude

Thank you!

I love Gabriel, love, love Angus and love Oscar.

I don't like Clementine at all. Please don't call your baby Gertrude, it's hideous but I love your other girls names.

janeite · 24/05/2010 21:39

Ooh I like YOUR name!

Boy:
Gabriel - lovely
Pierce - no
Angus - deranged cat
Fionn - no
Fergus - no
Oscar - yes
Girl:
Florence - lovely
Flora - like Florence much, much better
Mary - nope
Clementine (good chance or ginger hair so a wait-and-see scenario) - nope
Gertrude - horrible, sorry

How about - Benedict, Bartholomew or Lucas for a boy / Ruth, Naomi, Martha or Clover for a girl?

theagedparent · 24/05/2010 21:40

Angus and Mary

tummytickler · 24/05/2010 21:42

I love Mary and Gertrude.
Mary is far too underused imo - I can't believe it is not more popular - it is on our list too, but I cant decide between Mary and Miriam.
Gertrude is lovely too, although most people disagree with me on this - I love Gertie!.
There are loads of florences and I know a few Clementines, not really a fan of either tbh.
Flora is ok - bit dull.

There are millions of Gabriels - it is ok - i have nice associations as the ones I know all seem to be really lovely kids.
Don't like the others except Fergus which is lovely.
Yes, there are TONS of Oscars!

What are your other dcs called

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 24/05/2010 21:45

Love Fergus and Angus. Oscar is quite common and Fionn sounds quite feminine to me.

Florence nice, but common.
Flora - jokes about spreading them.
Clementine and Gertrude I like. I think Gertrude will become a more common (but not too common!) name in the next few years.

poguemahone · 24/05/2010 21:47

Thanks, so quick! Right, that's Gertrude off the list, so I'm making progress already

(Thanks Janeite, should I put Pogue Mahone on the list ?) I really like Benedict (was on the long list) but I'm not fond of the current pope. I'm overthinking this, aren't I?

Gabriel for a boy. How about

Gabriel Joshua
Gabriel Dylan
Gabriel Kyle
Gabriel Owen
Gabriel Reuben
Gabriel Alexander

I like Florence, Mary and Clementine of your girls' choices.

Clementine Florence
Clementine Mary
Florence Mary
Florence Clementine
Mary Florence
Mary Clementine

would all be lovely names

poguemahone · 24/05/2010 21:48

x-posted before the pro-Gertie posters!

LetThereBeRock · 24/05/2010 21:49

Mary would be my first choice of your girls names, though Flora and Florence are lovely too.

Clementine seems to be quite popular on here at the moment. I must admit I really don't understand why.

LaDiDaDi · 24/05/2010 21:49

Benedict is good!
Like Fergus, Angus and Pierce.

Like Flora.

poguemahone · 24/05/2010 21:50

tummytickler they're Grace & Theo...

I really love Benedict - my favourite of your boys, really gorgeous.

jkklpu · 24/05/2010 21:53

Gabriel and Florence. Prefer Marian(ne) to Mary.
What country do you live in? Would be important that it's pronounceable there, I'm assuming.

Tillyscoutsmum · 24/05/2010 21:53

Fergus and Florence are my favourites (DS is Fergus and would have been Florence if he were a girl). I like Angus and Mary as well

SillyTillyBilly · 24/05/2010 21:54

My favourites out of your list.

Gabriel
Florence and Mary

Great suggestions, thanks!

I was a bit worried about the 'Gay' teasing too, but won't we all be a bit more enlightened in the next 10 years or so .

DH and I are Scottish & Irish so should be able to get away with Scottish or Irish names.

Gabriel - love
Pierce - No
Angus - Only if you are Scottish
Fionn - no
Fergus - no
Oscar - like
Benedict - no

Girl:
Florence - ok
Flora - like
Mary - good middle name
Clementine - love
Gertrude - only for cows

swanandduck · 25/05/2010 12:52

I like Fionn an dFlora. I don't really like your other names and Gertrude is dreadful and taking old lady chic too far, in my opinion.

LuluF · 25/05/2010 12:58

janeite - we have a cat called Angus who is most definitely NOT deranged!

I'd pick

Angus (if my cat wasn't called Angus)
and
Flora

I think they would sound lovely - especially given your heritage.

I like Benedict, too, but my in Laws are Catholic and I worry about the Pope connection, too

janeite · 25/05/2010 16:52

Lulu - I was only talking about one particular cat, not Angus-cats in general but am very glad to hear that yours is a non-deranged version!

vicbar · 25/05/2010 17:47

I love Clemantine just so I can use Clemmie but DH just pulls a face (so does everyone else actually [HMM]
Im hoping to pretend the labour is really awful so I can dame DD when she's born. It worked with DD1 and he named DS1 and DD2 so I reckon its my turn.

I had Oscar if it was going to be a boy I know everyone says its really popular but I dont know any around here and as your abroad it might be unusual.

Good luck.

LuluF · 25/05/2010 17:53

janeite - I know, I understand. I knew a deranged cat called Oscar - it's the way it goes.

sedgiebaby · 25/05/2010 18:03

yay for gabriel, on my list if a boy, love florence but getting quite common, flori or florine I considered myself.
