we can't agree on boys' names.

We already have 2 girls and 1 boy. Some on MN would say we have one frilly name, one old lady name and we have a very sensible, popular traditional boys' name (Joseph, middle name Hamish).

My DH likes James. Nothing wrong with it, but I just don't like it. Also, not all that keen on the alliterative sound.

I favour names like Titus, Sholto, Rufus, Benedict, Sterling, Lucien - but I don't know if I would actually be bold enough to name a child any of those.

We have an Irish surname with Scottish connections. Our surname begins with 'F'.

Any suggestions?

the only one of yours I really like is Benedict. I like James although every second boy seems to be James ATM.

poppydaisy · 24/05/2010 18:15

The problem with Benedict is that it WILL be shortened to Ben.... which is very common (as also a short form for Benjamin).

swanandduck · 25/05/2010 14:01

I would prefer James to any of your names.

LuluF · 25/05/2010 14:04

I can't do it. I won't do it

Titus...really dislike, would worry about being called 'tit' or other

Sholto...dislike hugely

Rufus.. OK

Benedict.....dislike but like Ben

Sterling...reminds me of currency and the teen lad off the Disney channel, may become popular

Lucien...too 'Lucy' ish

James...nice ish but dull

PatsyIsPreggers · 25/05/2010 15:32

Benedict is a great name. You can shorten to Ben for 'normal' name, but full name is a bit more unusual than Benjamin. I really like it.

tammytoby · 25/05/2010 16:36

James safe but dull. Really like Lucian and Rufus.

LuluF · 25/05/2010 17:41

Thanks for the input - but what I was asking, but obviously didn't very clearly, is, given the list of names I like, what others can you suggest?

Thanks

thanks tammytoby - I wasn't singling you out - I hope you know that - it was a comment to all reading.

I like Tobias from your list, DH not keen and Sebastian (there is one in the family - although quite removed). Think Hugo might be a bit posh for us - DH likes Hugh - but I think it's too Welsh (given that we have no Welsh connections at all) and I'm not sure about Quentin.

Hugh is Irish too. I know several, of all ages.

tammytoby · 25/05/2010 19:41

Lulu, no I didn't feel singled out at all, just happened to be around after you posted. Hugh is nice, Hughie a cute nickname for when he's smaller.

Thanks for the suggestions - I'll expose DH to them now, leave them to work their way into his sub-conscious and you never know, he might even think he came up with some of them himself
