bullshit, though. you know for a fact that people on here have children with these names, you see them discussed often enough. ignorance is no defence.

kitstwins · 18/05/2010 13:57

Weegiemum the Angel Gabriel - the orginal source of the name - was male. Ergo the casting of blonde little girls in nativity plays is way off the mark. Gabrielle/Gabriella is the feminine version of the masculine Gabriel.

MrsRhettButler · 18/05/2010 13:57

i don't think its such a big deal though, you don't choose a name so that everyone else likes it, what matters is YOU like it.

you're never going to find a name that everyone loves and thats ok

weegiemum · 18/05/2010 13:59

I know Gabriel is the angel.

Remember Angels do not have Gender. Therefore Gabriel is not a male or female name.

But in my perception, its a girls name,

The thread does as what it ovverated. Gabriel is my vote for that!

Aitch · 18/05/2010 14:03

nonsense. what matters is that you like it AND that others like it, as evidenced by the fact that Baby Names is one of the most popular boards on here.

if you were slagging off your own names, fine. but you're not, it's people's kids you're talking about. i don't understand the impulse myself, i think it's a bit nasty.

and no further comment from the OP, i note, certainly no mention of her own children's names so we can all snort at them.

jellybeans · 18/05/2010 14:07

Olivia
James
Maddison
Henry

MrsRhettButler · 18/05/2010 14:10

hmmmm, i still think that it doesn't matter who else likes the name you choose because in life we are all going to meet people who do and people who don't like our names.

op shouldn't have to reveal her dc names, she wasn't asking anyone else to do that.

and actually op wasn't asking to slag off names just which we thought were overrated in our opinions...

is your dd called Amelie-Melly?

noddyholder · 18/05/2010 14:15

Alfie and anything with rose after the hyphen

swanandduck · 18/05/2010 14:30

Surely most mumsnetters realise that whatever name they choose for their children will be considered chavvy/dated/boring/ by some members of the population. Anonymous people on a forum saying 'actually I think the name James/Milly is overrated' is hardly going to send them off in tears because not everyone thinks it's a beautiful, gorgeous, fabulous name.
When people post on here and ask 'what do people think of the name Sophie' and people post back saying 'mmm, not mad about it, prefer Sophia' does that mean anyone with a dd called Sophie has now been insulted and the thread shouldn't have been started?

WhatsAllThisThen · 18/05/2010 16:23

Haha

I love the sniffy 'I notice the OP leaves the house occasionally and is not on this thread 24 hours a day. More than a little suspicious if you ask me'

I don't need to tell you my DC's names as in my opinion they are not over-rated. You'll have to start your own thread.

mathanxiety · 18/05/2010 16:26

Verity and Violet.

WhatsAllThisThen · 18/05/2010 16:28

I love Violet! It's so...vivid. Or something.

OP posts:
Aitch · 18/05/2010 16:31

no, actually, that's quite different. that's someone soliciting opinion on the name sophie, not someone asking a forum to slag off particular names. i'm surprised that you can't see the problem, but clearly you can't.

what is the point of this OP? what will the OP gain from finding out that Olivia is, in the opinion of most respondents, an 'over-rated' name?

and in your opinion they're not over-rated, OP, but go on, tell us and we can give you our opinion. it really does seem only fair.

WhatsAllThisThen · 18/05/2010 16:34

As I have said twice already, there is no particular point to this thread. As it is making you feel so aggressive, perhaps you would be happier elsewhere.

OP posts:
Aitch · 18/05/2010 16:40

i'm not being aggressive in the slightest, but thank you for the passive-aggressive smiley. here's one back.

so, what prompted you to post the thread today? what names do you think are over-rated, and why do you care either way?

WhatsAllThisThen · 18/05/2010 16:43

Glad you're not feeling aggressive.

There was no particular name that prompted me to post the thread. More that you do seem to get the same names over and over around here.

OP posts:
Aitch · 18/05/2010 16:45

good. so, what names do you think are over-rated and what prompted you to post this question?

Aitch · 18/05/2010 16:45

so by over-rated do you actually mean overly-popular?

WhatsAllThisThen · 18/05/2010 16:46

Actually I was really hoping to piss you off. That's why I leave the house occasionally so you wonder where I've gone. I laugh all the way down the road.

OP posts:
swanandduck · 18/05/2010 16:46

Aitch

The OP did not ask anyone to 'slag off' names, she just asked people what name they think is overrated. Nobody is forced to read the thread, it's just a bit of fun.
And I also found your post somewhat aggressive.
