My cousin is a Cordelia. I think it both a bit poncy and really nice. I'm not very keen on the other names.

LuluF · 15/05/2010 07:22

Cordelia and Clementine are lovely.

Augusta is Bertie Wooster's Aunt - though there's nothing wrong with that. PG Wodehouse is a good source of names IMO.

Allegra - not my favourite.

cumbria81 · 15/05/2010 07:45

way too poncey, I'm afraid.

TiggyR · 15/05/2010 07:54

I'm not wild about Augusta because it's a golf course and bit clunky for a little girl, plus 'Gussie' is a rather unflattering pet-nmae, but the rest are beautiful. I loved Cordelia and Clementine when I was PG (in the dark ages) but the don't fit with my last name.

Ophelia, Cressida and Daphne are lovely too.

persephoneplum · 15/05/2010 15:01

I love all of them. My last list was called overly-pretentious but I've got thick skin and any girl of mine deserves a grand name

Eff the naysayers, they're all awesome!

Conversely, the only one I don't like is Augusta.

If you really want poncey, I am sure we can suggest some for you!

treas · 15/05/2010 23:15

Have a friend whose has a dd called Cordelia which is shortened too Corky and you just know the kids at school will call Allegra Leggy.

madamefreckle · 17/05/2010 15:12

Clementine and Cordelia are ok but for something a bit similar sounding but not pretentious I'd go for Claudia - really lovely name.

dizzydixies · 17/05/2010 17:14

madamefreckle - I agree about claudia, its just a shame about the meaning

zozzle · 17/05/2010 17:33

Most of them sound v. pukey public school to me. Clementine ok.

dizzydixies · 17/05/2010 18:20

'v. pukey public school'? lovely way to desc baby names

gillybean2 · 17/05/2010 18:32

Clementine makes me think of a big round orange fruit. Not a good way to go should she turn out to be overweight or into fake tan later in life

Cordelia is too much like cordial, though maybe the youngsters of today won't know what that is to nn her lemon...

Augusta - everyone will think she was born in august. Which she may be...? And I can see the playground rhyming going ' augusta disgusta '

And allegra brings the word fast to mind. If you want her to be known as a fast woman that's fine i guess...

Sorry I personally wouldn't pick any of them. But she's not my child, so up to you!

zozzle · 17/05/2010 18:51

Sorry dizzydixies - didn't intend to offend. I just don't do really posh, well not that posh anyway. It's just I would imagine their friends to be called Henrietta, Prudence and Constance, none of which are my cup of tea that's all - but alot of people love them so what do I know!!

Lots of people have put their twopence in about my name suggestions in the past - (not all complimentary) so each to their own I guess...

dizzydixies · 17/05/2010 19:38

no offence taken at all zozzle - I just think that some of the times people use phrases on the baby names threads without thinking that these are going to be either already associated with people's children or about to be - I have no love of the use of the word 'chav' either.

I stand by all the names I gave my girls, Cordelia included and have no problem with whatever image people on here associate with it - she is fab imo

Acanthus · 17/05/2010 19:43

Allegra was definitely a car in the seventies. And she'd be called Allie (Alley? )

InvaderZim · 17/05/2010 19:46

Dunno if anyone has said this, but Allegra is an allergy medication in the states!

madamefreckle · 17/05/2010 22:38

Oh, never knew Claudia meant 'lame'...hmmm... but most people won't know that and i've known a few very lovely, beautiful, totally un-lame Claudias.

bonmot · 18/05/2010 12:53

The car was an AllegrO not an AllegrA - i have been saying this to DH and others over and over again for the past few months, i LOVE Allegra but at the moment DH won't agree to it but he is coming round to Clementine - we must have similar taste in names OP. I like all your choices but am least keen on Augusta though i have to say - sounds a bit harsh
As for the poncey-ness of them, well if you like poncey names then you like poncey names and so are not going to settle for Emily or Alice - lovely as they both are.
'My' Allegra was due yesterday!!

gillybean2 · 18/05/2010 13:30

It doesn't matter that AllegrO is the car/musical phrase, it's what people will think/assume and you will be correcting them constantly.

I like unusual names myself, so it's not that I think they are 'poncy' as such. It's just that I wouldn't choose those ones myself for my reasons given above.

you have checked the initials don't spell anything untoward I assume.

For the record if I had had a girl I would of picked the name Verity.

Bonsoir · 18/05/2010 13:31

Clementine is lovely.

I'm not wild about any of the others.

LadyGardenia · 19/05/2010 11:00

I love both Clementine and Cordelia but having seen someone say Goose for Augusta I am now smitten with the idea of having Goose as a nickname.

I can trump the lot of you on syllables, too, I have 20 in my name (Christian, middles and sur-) and I can tell you growing up with that lot was no picnic! Funny how once you leave school and college it really never comes up, and once you aren't constantly defending them, you are free to like them.

BibiFashion · 19/05/2010 11:09

Clementine - nice
Cordelia -poncy
Augusta - nice
Allegra - poncy

loobylu3 · 19/05/2010 12:37

I am not mad about Augusta (sounds v serious and don't like Gussie much but all the others are v pretty names!

Who cares if other people think they are 'poncey'? You should choose the name you (and your partner) love.

Acanthus · 19/05/2010 13:28

Oh yes
You've still got the alley probem though.
