Thanks for all the points of view! I agree, it's the nick names you have to watch out for- not keen on Gussie though DH is (why?) or Delia for obv. reasons. We like poncy names but I fear mockery (for me or little Gus!)

Thanks ZZZ! G Can now strike Clementine having seen that scary bloke by the campfire.

messy - Cordelia has loads of options, not just Delia

Coco
Cordie
DeeDee
Dilly

all rather sweet in my completelybiased opinion

messydrawers · 14/05/2010 19:26

Also all these characters come to a sticky end apart from Augusta- oh dear, I must have morbid taste in babies names...

noooooooooooooooooooooooo cordelia is a lovely name - did you not see my daughter of the sea/latin meaning heart post above???

dizzydixies · 14/05/2010 19:33

I love this Anne of Green Gables - Cordelia

seashore · 14/05/2010 19:33

Clemetine and Allegra are the weak ones there, the others are fantastic, but then dd is named very similar to one of them. Not pouncy at all, just proper names. MW in hospital couldn't stop saying my dd name because she liked it som much!

My favourite from your list is Augusta.

messydrawers · 14/05/2010 19:35

Yes! Sea connection good as dh is "king of the sea". Not literally, just meaning of name. Hope that doesn't mean he'll kill little Cordelia after a falling out over the family farm. Ok, he wants to know what you think of Evangeline (having originally banned me from posting names on MN)

OP posts:
dizzydixies · 14/05/2010 19:40

I live Evangeline but I would have used Evan as the nn - please see above posts regards my strange choice of nn for my children

be aware of how popular Eve/Evie/Eva etc etc are at the minute though - if that bothers you in the slightest, it doesn't bother me

one of DD2's middle names is Cecelia and I love it, if it was her first name we would use Cece as a nn

Chislers · 14/05/2010 19:45

Clementine - unattractive sound
Cordelia - lovely name with loads of really nice nick names
Augusta - awful. Awg? Gus?
Allegra - I like it

Cordelia and Allegra are beautiful. Clementine and Augusta are a bit clunkier and fustier.

MamaLazarou · 14/05/2010 19:46

I don't think they are poncy at all. Allegra's a bit 'OK yah', but the others are all lovely.

bibbitybobbityhat · 14/05/2010 19:47

Clementine wins by miles. We had a thread about Clementine yesterday!

LynetteScavo · 14/05/2010 19:48

I love Clementine, and Cordelia.

I like Allegra.

Not so keen on Augusta.

None of them are poncy, IMO.

Chislers · 14/05/2010 19:48

What does Allegra mean in Italian? not fast is it? Alegre in spanish is more like cheerful, lively. I would have seen Allegra as the same word (but in a different language)

MamaLazarou · 14/05/2010 19:50

It means jaunty, or gay (in the old-fashioned sense).

MamaLazarou · 14/05/2010 19:50

(So, yes: the same as the Spanish Alegre)

Chislers · 14/05/2010 19:51

That's a lovely meaning for a name imo

MamaLazarou · 14/05/2010 19:53

Agreed.

ZZZenAgain · 14/05/2010 20:12

I really like Allegra but dh wasn't having any of it.

Actually with the surname I think it would have been a bit odd!

bibbitybobbityhat · 14/05/2010 21:21

Please come back and tell us how it all went, won't you mmj?

bibbitybobbityhat · 14/05/2010 21:21

Sorry! wrong thread

KickArseQueen · 14/05/2010 21:40

You can turn Augusta from poncy to chavvy by shortening it to Sta

Love Cordelia tho.........

LiquoriceLila · 14/05/2010 21:42

I only like Clementine Im afraid, I really do like that though

JosephineClaire · 14/05/2010 21:43

I went to university with an Augusta - Gussie or Goose for short

florence2511 · 15/05/2010 02:46

I love Codelia. Anne of Green Gables would love to have been called Cordelia. I also love Clementine.

Not too keen on Augusta or Allegra.
