There's a student at the school I work at called 'Forget' o_O

There are also 2 'Blessing's and a 'Lehlohonolo'.

There is a boy called 'Innocent', another called 'Ethanim'. A girl called 'Lolli'. And that's not even the start.

Is it wrong of me to be slightly maddened by all this? I'm by no means a traditionalist (DD1 is River) but some of them are rather... interesting.

Has anyone else come across names where they've been taken-aback?

TBH I'd be taken aback by River

theworldisoutthere · 14/05/2010 15:20

Haha, fair enough

Forget? Are you fucking kidding me???

theworldisoutthere · 14/05/2010 15:24

I know, it just seems so harsh...

i LOVE Lehlohonolo. That is superb.

msrisotto · 14/05/2010 15:27

Still, it's gotta make your day slightly more interesting right?

msrisotto · 14/05/2010 15:28

Can you imagine the CV or application form with Forget as the first name? I wouldn't do it, you'd actually have to change your name.

ConDemNation · 14/05/2010 15:28

Are these names given by the African community? i think they have some fantastic names going on. I wish I had the guts to use something like that tbh!

theworldisoutthere · 14/05/2010 15:28

I think looking through the registers will become a way of entertaining myself during idle moments :D

I want to know why 'Forget'

maybe this is a family who left a warring country? It could be hugely significant.

Sorry but I love it, anyway.

theworldisoutthere · 14/05/2010 15:29

ConDemNation - Blessing is nice (one is in fact called 'Blessing Talent [Surname]'), at least you'd feel wanted!

Sadly no, they are not from the African community. If they were there'd at least be a cultural reason for it.

I was at college with a Bright and a Fabulous!

ruddynorah · 14/05/2010 15:30

are they african names? i worked with an 'efficient' once. everyone called him fish. also a good friend had had 'doctor' as a middle name, and a rather unpronouncable first name, so everyone calls him 'doc'.

the idea is that they are inspirational names. not sure about forget though

tammy234 · 14/05/2010 15:30

Without knowing the childrens' heritage, it's difficult to comment really. Those names might be very common in their home country (well, apart from Forget...).

But, on the other hand, look at the name Condoleezza or even Barrack . Maybe we all need to be a bit more 'open' and relaxed about names?

theworldisoutthere · 14/05/2010 15:30

I meant apart from Forget - not sure where she's from exactly. that would be an awesome reason for it.

ConDemNation · 14/05/2010 15:31

Crikey...then I will admit to being taken aback as well! I imagined they were all African names.

OrmRenewed · 14/05/2010 15:32

Perhaps when they went to register the baby, the register asked the child's name and the parent said 'Erm...ohhh...ermm I forget....'

mayanna123 · 14/05/2010 15:34

Well, they are unusual, but I actually like them .

And people will certainly remember them/their names more easily than if they were named Steve, Mike or Jack.

mathanxiety · 14/05/2010 17:35

Innocent is an old name used in Christian circles. There have been quite a few popes of this name and it's used in the Mediterranean region and in Spanish speaking N and S America. It's also used in the eastern Orthodox churches and crops up in Russia as a name too.

Barack means Blessing in Kiswahili (comes from Baraka).

There are a lot of names in English that mean something akin to Blessing, or that meant something very literal back when they first appeared. Alexander, for instance, means Defender (of Mankind)/ Warrior.

MamaLazarou · 14/05/2010 19:55

FORGET???!!!

mathanxiety · 14/05/2010 20:00

The oldest son of Joseph (OT) was Manasses (Greek) or Manasseh (Hebrew) which means 'to forget'.

Or maybe it's Forget Me Not (Surname) -- an unusual spin on the flower name trend...

Missus84 · 14/05/2010 20:03

Someone with a child called River isn't really in a position to judge imo!

Adair · 14/05/2010 20:13

'maddened'?!

Why has it got ANYTHING to do with you? I can't even now remember all the 'odd' names I have taught, and I know they weren't all John and Lucy, keep an open mind - names grow on you very quickly. Honestly, love, after about a week there you won't even notice because - just like River- it will seem 'normal' (whatever that means). Oh, and you will have got to know the children who the names belong to .

ChynaDoll2006 · 14/05/2010 20:41

The Blessings and Innocent MUST be African. I don't believe you.

pickledmonkey · 14/05/2010 20:47

yes have come across quite a few strange names lately

i find it quite interesting
