There's a student at the school I work at called 'Forget' o_O

There are also 2 'Blessing's and a 'Lehlohonolo'.

There is a boy called 'Innocent', another called 'Ethanim'. A girl called 'Lolli'. And that's not even the start.

Is it wrong of me to be slightly maddened by all this? I'm by no means a traditionalist (DD1 is River) but some of them are rather... interesting.

Has anyone else come across names where they've been taken-aback?

It means blessing, luck, fortunate...along those lines.

I think it rolls off the tongue in a very good way! might not get away with it in parochial southern england though.

SparklyJules · 17/05/2010 10:42

I know a little one called "Bienvenue" and the name always makes me smile.

Don't be mad!

DramaInPyjamas · 17/05/2010 10:48

An African woman who worked in a bank where I used to live was called Regret.

theworldisoutthere · 17/05/2010 10:52

ConDemNation - see DramaInPyjamas! That kinds what I mean about Forget... Probably has a deep meaning but sounds unfortunate.

Glass houses....

You can't draw a figurative line where whimsy becomes ridiculous.

One woman's River is clearly another woman's Forget.

I think they are on a par TBH.

lottiejenkins · 17/05/2010 11:02

The current President of Nigeria is called GoodLuck Jonathan!!

DramaInPyjamas · 17/05/2010 11:08

The woman (Regret) loved her name btw. She had a big, bubbly personality.. Which actually complimented her name, if you see what I mean..?

She might be on MN, she had just had another baby last I heard..

theworldisoutthere · 17/05/2010 11:11

FWIW, River is named after a character in a TV series called Firefly...DP's idea!

When did I EVER say they were ridiculous? The whole reason I pointed out DDs name was to that end (i.e. I understand that may be considered 'ridiculous' by some).

GoodLuck is a marvellous name for a president!

mrsruffallo · 17/05/2010 11:18

Forget is a strange name isn't it?

Maybe these names don't translate well

jaabaar · 17/05/2010 11:30

I work with a Nigerian company and there are many beautiful names I come accross:

Gloria
Innocent
Goodluck

Actually the new president of Nigeria is called "Good Luck Joathan"!

pedrothellama · 17/05/2010 11:31

I once heard of two little sisters callled Pepsi and Bacardi after their mum's favourite drink.

I kid you not............

Forget seems quite a kind name to bestow on a child after that. Is the T silent?

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 17/05/2010 11:32

Mostly people are asking about names they are considering for their own children, but unless they are considering the name Horghgoedbvwasp then any responses will be about names that hundreds or thousands of other people, including other Mumsnetters and casual browsers happening upon the thread, will have already named their children.

MrsRhettButler · 17/05/2010 11:34

well you did say you were maddened... that kinda shows that you were judging...

i like river btw, innocent and blessing are nice too

theworldisoutthere · 17/05/2010 11:43

Glad you like it as I've said, that wa sprobably the worng word to used. Lets just say they piqued my curiosity!

"some of them are rather... interesting."

i find it hard to believe that you were not implying that these names were ridiculous.

theworldisoutthere · 17/05/2010 12:10

Couldn't quite think how to express it without sounding mean (ironically, it seems). I'm sorry if my lack of eloquence offends you.

I live in Asia and know of people called

Maverick
Lemon
Chewbacca
Monkey

These are, to be fair, English names adopted by Chinese people. However, it is still an officially registered name, not just a nickname.

theworldisoutthere · 17/05/2010 13:13

Lol @ Chewbacca! I think DP would love to call any future DS that. Or Han.

BettySuarez · 17/05/2010 13:16

My DD goes to school with a very very lovely girl called Precious Love

SixtyFootDoll · 17/05/2010 13:18

at Chewbacca

Although I have come across a Chakote here which is apparently off star trek.

theworldisoutthere · 17/05/2010 13:21

Yes, yes it is (although quite a cool character to be named after!).

Precious now just reminds me of that scene in Friends...

Like I said I was at college (in the last couple of years - an independent Bible College) with several African students.

There was Fab (Fabulous!)

There were 2 Brights (one Bright, one Brightstar)

There was an Eddie (Edification)

I LOVE their names - would never give them to a child in the European context but love that they can have them.

We should be more open in our acceptance of non-European names!

theworldisoutthere · 17/05/2010 13:41

The more African names I hear the more I think they are awesome.
