There's a student at the school I work at called 'Forget' o_O

There are also 2 'Blessing's and a 'Lehlohonolo'.

There is a boy called 'Innocent', another called 'Ethanim'. A girl called 'Lolli'. And that's not even the start.

Is it wrong of me to be slightly maddened by all this? I'm by no means a traditionalist (DD1 is River) but some of them are rather... interesting.

Has anyone else come across names where they've been taken-aback?

Wasn't there a french tennis player whose surname was Forget (For-zhay)? Perhaps this person was named after him?

hocuspontas · 14/05/2010 20:49

Sorry- don't know how that got in there...

cockles · 14/05/2010 20:50

We have an Empress (preen)

Boobaddum · 14/05/2010 21:51

The worst name I've ever heard is 'Unique' - feels like mother was setting her up for a big fall!

Adair · 14/05/2010 22:22

I feel a bit like that about 'Grace' - just destined to be a clumsy lump of a child (though probably quite sweet with it ).

5inthebed · 14/05/2010 22:25

When I lived in South Africa, I knew a Zulu woman whos children were called Innocence, Evidence and.........Patrick

gingerkirsty · 14/05/2010 22:39

I read on another names thread a post from a teacher who had two Uniques in her class

ConDemNation · 15/05/2010 08:10

actually, is this a weird wind up?

Lehlohonolo Ledwaba is a well known boxer. He was born in Soweto.

There are a lot of well known Lehlos.

Somehow this thread is making me uncomfortable...as though the OP were making a point about the infiltration into our culture of non european names, or something.

Hopefully it's not the case.

ConDemNation · 15/05/2010 08:11

...and being a new poster, apparently, as well.

Please can you clarify, OP?

mayanna123 · 15/05/2010 09:47

I agree, ConDemNation, the OP reads a bit like a journalist canvassing for opinions...

mayanna123 · 15/05/2010 15:01

... and has suddently dissapeared again

treas · 16/05/2010 00:03

At school we have Bliss, Zuzu and Avalon

theworldisoutthere · 17/05/2010 09:42

Internet is broken at home.

Sorry that I didn't know any "well known Lehlos" - I'd never heard one before!

Sorry also for sounding like a journalist - mainly curious to see if anyone else had heard interesting names.

ConDemNation - certainly not trying to make a point like that! As I said, I just thought it was interesting. Please don't read too much into it.

Also, 'maddened' is mainly about Forget - for all it may have a good reason behind it most people aren't going to think about it like that and read it badly.

At my DH's school, there is a "God Knows" and a "Satisfaction". The children are African and names like this are very common in African families.

OP - it is REALLY not your place to be "maddened" by their parents' name choices, whatever the children's heritage is or is not!!

theworldisoutthere · 17/05/2010 10:16

As above - in Forget's case I just feel kinda bad for her, for reasons already given and agreed with by other posters. I think 'amusedly bewildered' would probably be a better way fo putting it. As much as having a unique name could be nice, it could also be difficult.

FGS, it's not like I'm ranting and saying that it shouldn't be allowed/is bad, is it? Curiosity/interest in the reasons behind name choices is hardly a crime.

OP posts:
ConDemNation · 17/05/2010 10:24

Neither are those choices

it's really not any of our business what others name their children.

ChickensNeedOpposableThumb · 17/05/2010 10:25

Can some one please sound out Lehlohonolo to me please? I can't get my teeth around it and its bugging me. Ta.

theworldisoutthere · 17/05/2010 10:28

I never said they were

I do find it strange that on a board that is entirely devoted to whether you like/don't like names suddenly it's not my business - every thread on here is all about whether people approve or disapprove of names!

OP posts:
ConDemNation · 17/05/2010 10:28

lay lo ho nolo

ConDemNation · 17/05/2010 10:29

Mainly on here people are asking about their own child's name

not criticising other people's choices. I know some do, I don't really like those threads either. But I can see where you are coming from. I just think a bit of open mindedness and tolerance is a good thing.

ConDemNation · 17/05/2010 10:30

and if you are bewildered...why not ask for the reason behind it? That's what I would do.

theworldisoutthere · 17/05/2010 10:34

Believe me, I am open-minded and tolerant! But also criminally nosey. I wanted to know what other unusual names people had heard, but it seems my saying that they are unusual has in itself been misinterpreted as my saying they're a bad thing!

On here I have seen a good many people slating people's choices and people can be so rude. I wasn't trying to criticise, I'm just a nosey bugger.

Sorry if what you thought I was doing bothered you

ChickensNeedOpposableThumb · 17/05/2010 10:36

Thanks ConDemNation. For some reason, I couldn't break it down in to syllables What does it mean, do you know?

ConDemNation · 17/05/2010 10:36

Not a clue I will look it up
