Bess or Bessie?

Hi all

I'm 26 weeks preggers with DD1 and we're thinking of Elizabth nn Bess or Bessie. Suspect she'll get called both in reality but I'm becoming a bit fixated with which one we should use for the big post-birth announcement!

Any preferences? To me Bess is more elegant, Bessie more cute. DH is pro Bessie though (has already changed his laptop password to that!).

I know some people hate both btw, which is something we're going to have to live with as the idea seems to have stuck for us now!

Thanks

Hi, I prefer Bessie but think Betsy is nicer.

TheFallenMadonna · 14/05/2010 10:41

Bess

I love Bess.

I would say introduce the baby as Bess, and you can still call her Bessie as well Probably easier this way round as Bessie seems the less formal of the two?

Wise words, thanks!

Bess is gorgeous, I love it. As someone else said you could always call her Bessie if you wanted to.

Oooooh! I LOVE this name! (can you tell?)

DH said it sounds like a horse, but he knows nothing.

Why do you need a formal nn if you have Elizabeth for formal and Bess(ie) as a nn. I would announce her as Bessie as it will be shortened to Bess anyway.

oliviacrumble · 15/05/2010 00:45

Have never heard the name outside of the fictional "Bessie Bunter" ( I think she was Billy's sister).

All I can picture when I hear the name, is a morbidly obese school-girl, in a 1940's gym-slip...

MNHubbie · 15/05/2010 00:49

Why not have her official name as Elizabeth but tell folks you'll be calling her Bess and give her the choice when she is older and whilst she is young and cute call her Bessie and see if that sticks?

LittleSilver · 16/05/2010 19:12

Either, both lovely!
