Jessica - opinions please!

We're expecting our 1st DC in about 6 weeks (don't know the gender) and was wondering what people thought of the name Jessica.

My DH and I have both always loved this name, even before I fell pregnant. I particularly like the fact that it can be shortened to Jess or Jessie.

I wouldn't normally post in this section as am of the opinion that if you like a name it doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks.

However, a couple of people recently, when we have shared our name possibilities, have started to make comments like "Oo I wouldn't pick the name Jessica - hasn't it been the most common name for years"!

I was aware of this but it never really bothered me as I love the name and don't actually know any Jessicas or anyone who has chosen that name.

The problem is that my DH does seem bothered by these comments and is starting to doubt our choice! It's thrown me a bit to be honest.

What do you think?

I would ignore all comments to the negative. Its a lovely name. I think it was more popular back when I was born in the early 80s. Not come accross any at any play groups.

BallpointPen · 13/05/2010 16:28

Jessica is my name.

As a child I didn't like it but as an adult I do.

If you like it I would say go for it, it is a nice name which is why it is in the top 20 most popular.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 13/05/2010 16:30

Lovely name. Go for it!!

That despite the only Jessica I do know is an utterly horrible person!!!

SillyTillyBilly · 13/05/2010 16:38

It is funny because although it is one of the most popular names I don't know any little Jessicas at all! It's a nice name.

Chathappy · 13/05/2010 16:39

It is supposed to be so popular yet I only know one Jessica also? (and she is about 9 I think?).

It's a very pretty classic name - go for it

plonker · 13/05/2010 16:47

I think it's a beautiful name!

I know that it's very popular but I don't actually know any under the age of 10 (besides my dog )!

Go for it!

Ishoglomo · 13/05/2010 17:28

It's a lovely name

JBroRo · 13/05/2010 17:54

Thanks ladies - I totally agree! Just wanted a bit of reassurance for some reason!

My other girls faves are Madeleine, Phoebe & Imogen.

Struggling with boys!

I prefer Jessica to your other choices, followed by Imogen.

What are your ideas for boys?

JBroRo · 13/05/2010 18:27

So far

Max
Eddie
Daniel
Joe

Not 100% about any of them TBH!

Ishoglomo · 13/05/2010 18:30

Those are all nice too. Would you use longer versions as full names?

JBroRo · 13/05/2010 19:21

No, only for Daniel. Not keen on Joseph, Edward or Maximillian!

Do you have DCs?

DomesticG0ddess · 13/05/2010 19:32

I really like Jessica, so pretty.

jellybeans · 13/05/2010 23:29

Jessica is lovely, I have always liked it. Imogen is ok but prefer Jessica. I don't think it is that popular really, I only know of one or two. Most babies round here are Isabelle or Evie.

I like all your boys names but Max and Joe are my favourites.

JBroRo · 14/05/2010 15:52

Thanks jellybeans! It does seem strange that Jessica tops the list but I don't know of any at all. I agree as well that we have had a lot of Isabelles and Evies too.

I like Jessica - so does my nearly 21 year old daughter! - although most of the time she goes by Jess. At the time she was born there were quite a few around, in her year at school for example, but now I don't think she knows any others!

BudaisintheZONE · 14/05/2010 16:32

I like it a lot. Niece is Jessica - she is almost 10 and there is one in DS's class who is 9. Don't know any others.

Oh. I do. I know an 18 year old Jessika. Enough said.

ChislersMum · 14/05/2010 20:25

I don't think it is an awful name, far from it. But it's a tiny bit harsh. The ssssss and the kuh together - bit harsh.

Sorry.

ChislersMum · 14/05/2010 20:26

Your other names are all lovely. Phoebe in particular, but Madeleine and Imogen are really nice too.

queenclarion · 14/05/2010 20:38

I think Jessica is a really nice namea and I like Jess. I know a 4yo called Jessica and a 32yo Jessica - suits them both.

My dad says that it is really posh? I have never thought of it like this, but he told me this a few weeks ago. Not sure if that's just him or that's how the name is thought of.

AbFabT · 14/05/2010 21:21

Love it. Didn't realise it was that well-used though. Very pretty name, and Jess is cool.

kookykid · 14/05/2010 21:35

My DCs are Jessica and Joseph (Jess and Joe)... so OBVIOUSLY I think they're gorgeous! I worried, too, about Jess being a bit popular, but I reckon there's a good reason and that's because it's a lovely name!

LiquoriceLila · 14/05/2010 21:40

Jessica is a lovely name, I only know one and she is 6

Wanderingsheep · 14/05/2010 21:48

I've always liked the name Jessica, it's lovely. Go for it! I know two 2 year old Jessicas but I always say that names are popular for a reason! No one is going to make this face when you say that your child is called Jessica as opposed to if you called her Gertrude or something!

pellmell · 14/05/2010 21:59

ooh I have enjoyed this thread.
I'm pleased I chose Jessica for my daughter who was born in 2005. It was the most popular name that year (I think) and I genuinely had no idea as like others have said on here havent come across that many!
I honestly thought I was choosing a nice but hardly used name.
She is always described as "little Jess" by all who love her.
