Not sure about name...

I love the name Flora for my daughter, but everyone keeps reminding me of the fact that it is a well known margarine brand!!

It was not the first thing that came to mind when I thought of it (the first thing I thought of was flowers) but I'm worried about how everyone will see me and her if we call her Flora...?

My DP and I both really like it.
I'm just wondering if anyone else likes it / would consider it for their daughter and what people would think if their child had a friend called Flora???

Thanks guys.

I used to know a Flora in my late teens and the joke was that she 'spreads easily'. But having said that you can make a joke out of almost any name can't you.

I actually like the name it and wouldn't think it at all strange if a friend of mine called her daughter Flora.

Yes, some people will think about the margarine. But it will also be the name of your dd and people will come to associate it with her.

Nice name.

sophiesmummie · 13/05/2010 12:21

But rasputin, what does poshness have to do with it?!

Why would a 'posh' child have a less association with Flora margerine? Do they only use butter?! Honestly, I don't understand...

WhyFrank · 13/05/2010 12:21

I think it's lovely. Would be on my list.

waitingimpatiently · 13/05/2010 12:24

You've all made me feel loads better, except forkhandles - spreads easily haha. Then again, young children won't say that, by the time she's a teenager she'll be able to stick up for herself.

And I probably act posher than I am... I'm posher than the DP anyway haha.

I think it's a lovely old name and wouldn't worry about the margarine connection. It's not like you're calling her 'utterly butterly'.

swanandduck · 13/05/2010 12:55

Sorry, I meant 'old fashioned' name.

KRH · 13/05/2010 13:08

I LOVE the name! I wouldn't worry about the margarine connotations because as has already been said almost every name can be shortened or have something said about it in a way you don't like. (My son is always being asked where his Ark is and when we announced my daughter's name pretty much everyone of my parent's age and above responded immediately with "Isabel on a bike really necessary?! - not even appropriate as her name is Isabella NOT Isabel!) If you like it - go with it!

SE13Mummy · 13/05/2010 13:42

I know a Flora who is in her late 20's and think it's a lovely name. I think naming a subsequent daughter Clover may encourage people to think you'd selected names from the butter section but assuming you don't already have a child named Stork, Anchor etc. it'll be fine.

diddl · 13/05/2010 14:22

Lovely.

weegiemum · 13/05/2010 14:24

I know a Flora who is 90.

I know a Flora who is 9 months.

Timeless IMO.

JosephineClaire · 13/05/2010 14:27

I ADORE the name Flora, and it's number 3 on our list - and also can be shortened to nicknames Flo and/or Lora if she wants when she's older

I think it's very pretty. I know a very bookish Scots family who have a Flora, a Jock, a Hector, and Jimmy, a Charlie, a Nancy and a Geordie. Always makes me smile.

meggymegmegs · 13/05/2010 14:37

I think it's beautiful, I wouldn't have thought of the marg thing, and like others have said, there's a dodgy nickname for every name out there so I'd go for it!

Ineedsomesleep · 13/05/2010 14:37

I quite like the name Flora. It doesn't remind me of the margarine though for some reason everytime I hear Flora I think of Floral Gums. That's not a bad association though in my book.

Ummm Floral gums.

Chathappy · 13/05/2010 15:05

I really like it and expecting a girl soon too - but it also has that marg association for me too which I can't seem to block out of my head !

telsa · 13/05/2010 16:52

My 12 year niece is Flora - I don't think of marg at all! Doubt anyone else does.
