Should I still use it?

Am 31 wks pg and decided early on that if it was a girl we would call her Elizabeth. Met good friend at Christmas whose wife was a few weeks from birth and in a discussion about names mentioned this.

A few weeks later their baby was born and they called her Elisabeth.

Should I go ahead, if our baby is a girl, ours slightly different spelling after all and they live miles away. what would you do???

I'd call her Elizabeth. Different spelling afterall. And you're not likely to see her everyday.

mathanxiety · 11/05/2010 15:46

Yes, you got your intentions across before their baby was born so they knew you had decided on it for your baby. Twas a bit cheeky of them to nab it, actually.

Psammead · 11/05/2010 15:46

I personally wouldn't - but I would be quite upset and probably regret not using it.

Do what you feel. You're perfectly within your right to use the name, especially as you'd discussed it with her so she must have known you like it too.

Do you have many mutual friends? Are you likely to have this woman and her DD in your lives forever?

whywhywhydelilah · 11/05/2010 15:52

Yes use it you might end up using completely different nn any way.

pinkgrapefruitjuice · 11/05/2010 15:57

Dont see or hear so much from him now he is married, although his wife is always pleasant enough. Have lots of mutual friends and I know his family really well. We probably see them a couple of times a year.

Just cant think of another name I like better.

In that case I'd use it and feel no qualms about it, actually.

scoobychocolate · 11/05/2010 16:02

If you like the name then definatly stick with it

Psammead · 11/05/2010 16:02

I mean because you don't see them often.

henry37 · 11/05/2010 16:05

yes you dont own a name and its not like there family or you see them everyday.

grumpypants · 11/05/2010 16:07

we were going to call dd madelaine but friends got their first (race to deliver) and we decided not to - tbh i'm quite glad as it might have felt not so 'original' . However I recently met someone i see often whose ds has the same name as mine and it's completely normal. Not sure what the difference is but there sort of is one iyswim.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 11/05/2010 18:58

In these circs, I'd use it. It's a lovely name and has lots of great nn too. Which nn do you like, out of interest?

pinkgrapefruitjuice · 11/05/2010 19:02

Agree theres lots of choice for nn. Thats one of the reasons I like it so much, it suits any age group. I like Betty or Beth.
