Need complete honesty, promise not to be offended!

But Alexander (Alex for short) Joseph is our favourite at the moment. Not too in love with it so won't be offended! Surname begins with P, two syllables.

I think that's a lovely name, I wanted Alexander to shorten to Xander but DH gave me the face so we went with something else.

oceryo · 11/05/2010 11:49

Very nice name

AndieWalsh · 11/05/2010 11:50

Classic, simple, lovely

Pootles2010 · 11/05/2010 11:52

Only problem is - my DH seems to think its normal to shorten it to Sandy. To me this just conjures up visions of Olivia Newton John in a twinset.

Lovely.

I´ve never known an Alexander shortened to Sandy.

VengefulKitty · 11/05/2010 11:59

I like it. No shortening to Sandy though. Never heard of it all myself.

I have heard of male Sandys but am pretty sure they were not Alexanders.

Go for it.

Pootles2010 · 11/05/2010 12:00

He seems to think its a Scottish thing?

Maybe not if he has red hair then, if you want to avoid Sandy. (from one who is waiting in hope one of my DS' gets that as a nickname as I love it)

yellowblossom · 11/05/2010 12:05

Lovely.

flopsy1974 · 11/05/2010 12:40

Great name

LouMacca · 11/05/2010 12:58

Lovely. Go for it.

LadyBiscuit · 11/05/2010 13:00

Lovely name but kick your DH every time he tries to call your DS Sandy

canella · 11/05/2010 13:03

i have an alexander but would never dream of calling him sandy!! his friends call him alex (altho i only ever call him alexander at home!)

i think its a great name (obviously) and think Joseph goes really well with it!

RooBear · 11/05/2010 13:05

love it-esp. alexander as a full name

oceryo · 11/05/2010 13:09

Like Xander as well.

brennannbooth · 11/05/2010 13:10

Love it.

NorkyButNice · 11/05/2010 13:19

Love Alexander - it's on the list for DC2 in July.

Goes very nicely with Joseph too!

mumoftoomany · 11/05/2010 13:22

Personally, I'm not keen on Alex. It is a very common (as in popular) name round here for both girls and boys.

RedZora · 11/05/2010 13:32

Both lovely. Especially Alexander

scarymutha · 11/05/2010 13:53

Am having an Alexander myself next week (unless they have it all wrong and he's a she) and going to shorten it to Al or Alex or Xander depending on my mood, and whether or not DS needs telling off or not (so important to have lots of syllables available for emphasis). My mum wants to shorten it to Sasha (something to do with Russian names), but have heard of the Sandy option too but mostly as Scottish.

carrotsarenottheonlyvegetable · 11/05/2010 14:05

Sandy is a Scottish NN for Alexander, and I know a lovely elderly Scottish man who goes by it.

lovechoc · 11/05/2010 14:19

You can call him Eck as a NN.

Shodan · 11/05/2010 14:32

I also know a Scottish Alexander who's known as Sandy, but my Alexander is known as Alex (occasionally Alexander).

You can probably gather that I think Alexander is a fabulous name. I quite like Joseph too.
