Currently 30wks, decided early on to keep baby's gender a surprise and am struggling to find a name that I like that DP seems willing to let me have!
DP's family are very traditional and also HUGE, which has already cut out a lot of my favourites as close relatives already have them or reject them out of hand And although half the names I suggest are instantly shot down, he took to listing his favourite fantasy characters and expected me to take him seriously!

So I thought I'd see if I could find some unbiased opinions on my favourite choices
For a girl:
Kira
Sophie
Jessica
Alexis
Chloe

Or a boy ...
Joshua
Alexander
Thomas
Damien
Samuel

Fire away, I can take it

Kira - don't like it, funny spelling.
Sophie - ok
Jessica - ok
Alexis - not keen though I do like Alexa
Chloe - ok

Joshua -ok
Alexander - really like this
Thomas - ok
Damien - no
Samuel - really like this

umf · 10/05/2010 09:57

I like them, except Kira and Damien. Would think of Alexis as a boy's name. Alicia?

gingerbaby · 10/05/2010 09:58

I think re your family's rejection of names you need to ignore it, our family thought we were right weirdos for DS's name (Rufus) but now can't see him any other way.

Girls - Jessica is fab, timeless, versitile. The others are nice, solid names but don't light any fireworks for me.

Boys - NOT DAMIEN!!! What ever you do DO NOT call your son Damien!! Have you thought about Samwell instead of Samuel? All the others are lovely.

I think you've got some lovely, classic names there.

Enjoy!

confusedmummie · 10/05/2010 09:59

i love chloe but thats because mine got that name lol kira is a really nice name as not all that common and i like thomas and joshua for the boys pick and tell the people that your picking the name you like because it is you who has to give birth ti him or her and 24/7 look after him or her (really hate it when people say it meaning a child)

lostrequiem · 10/05/2010 10:18

Thanks guys Just got time to reply before midwife descends!

Nobody seems to even take Damien seriously as a name just because of that stupid film That's my biggest fear, that I pick a name that gets my precious baby picked on later in life (it happened to me, it can happen to him/her!)

Everyone I've asked seems to like Jessica, so I'll probably bump that to the top of the list

Kira nice, its pretty
Sophie also nice but not so pretty
Jessica niceish
Alexis ok but too many s sounds
Chloe not for me but nice enough

Joshua love it
Alexander ok
Thomas not for me but ok
Damien ok
Samuel nice but don't like shortened to sam

CakeandRoses · 10/05/2010 10:35

Please don't let family dictate your choice of names! You'll end up throwing out your faves and ending up with a bland compromise.

Most MNetter's agree its a decision best kept to the two of you (see my thread here: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/baby_names/950027-Did-you-tell-anyone-your-names-shortlist-before-baby-w as)

Kira - It's nice but prefer Keira spelling
Sophie - ok (super popular)
Jessica - Probably my fave one of the list
Alexis - not for me, prefer Alexa but that's getting popular
Chloe - ok

Or a boy ...
Joshua - ok
Alexander - ok
Thomas - ok
Damien - I like it and know an adult Damien, never even thought of his name in connection with the film
Samuel - not keen

I'm probably not the best person to respond on your name choices as I tend to avoid popular names however as most of your choices are v popular I'm assuming you don't have the same issue with that.

imahappycamper · 10/05/2010 10:40

I taught a Damien. Don't do it.
Joshua has a naughty boy reputation. I know one lovely one, but many others who are always in trouble.

Hassled · 10/05/2010 10:42

Sophie, Jessica and Chloe are all nice (although there are a lot of Sophies about).

Joshua, Alexander and Thomas are nice.

oceryo · 10/05/2010 11:50

I like Sophie, Jessica and Chloe. Prefer Alexandra to Alexis.

I like your boys' choices but not so keen on Damien.

oceryo · 10/05/2010 11:50

Jamieandhismagictorch · 10/05/2010 12:42

Ditto oceryo. Favourites : Jessica, Alexander and Samuel

Thomas is VERY popular

diddl · 10/05/2010 13:04

Don´t like Sophie, Alexis or Damien.

mopsyflopsy · 10/05/2010 13:35

The only names I like are Sophie (although prefer Sophia) and Damien (prefer it spelt Damian). But I have never heard of the film some of the others have mentioned.

Your other boys' names are VERY popular, but that may not bother you .

twosofar · 10/05/2010 13:40

To be honest IMHO they are all a bit blah

If i were held at gunpoint I'd say Alexander for a boy and Sophia for a girl (but not Sophie)

mopsy you have honestly never heard of The Omen?????!!

mopsyflopsy · 10/05/2010 13:50

The Omen? Yes, I've heard of the movie but can't remember watching it (or if I have, can't remember much of it .

twosofar · 10/05/2010 14:44

Damien was the devil child so unfortunately name has become synonymous with evil

mathanxiety · 10/05/2010 17:31

I love Damien. I like Alec more than Alexander or Alex.

From the girls' names, I like Chloe, prefer Alexa to Alexis.

Hulababy · 10/05/2010 17:38

From OP list I prefer Sophie and Thomas

henry37 · 11/05/2010 16:03

sophie although very popular , really like alexander.

AdasMum · 11/05/2010 16:09

Sophie & Alexander would be my choice.
Definitely not Kira, Alexis or Damien.

swanandduck · 11/05/2010 16:14

Kira -There's an Irish name 'Ciara' and I always think 'Kira' is just a phoney spelling of this.
Sophie - Nice but boring
Jessica - Ditto
Alexis - Don't like
Chloe - Nice, pretty, maybe overused but less so than Sophie and Jessica

Or a boy ...
Joshua - Overused
Alexander - Nice
Thomas - Nice
Damien - Aaagh
Samuel - Bit pompous.
