What do you think? It's for a boy. (should I have one).

Before I opened the thread I thought it was a girls name. Does sound girly to my ears.

OrmRenewed · 06/05/2010 21:45

I know an Ilya. She's one of my favourite people.

Umami · 06/05/2010 21:48

One of the Men from UNCLE.

Kuryakin!

MrsRhettButler · 06/05/2010 21:51

i know an ilyas who's a boy imo ilya is ok for male or female, its nice

annasophia · 06/05/2010 21:52

I have a German friend called Ilja. He is about 40 now. I think Ilja/Ilya is the slavic form of Elias.

SpringHeeledJack · 06/05/2010 21:52

here he is

telsa · 06/05/2010 22:36

I know a 5 year old called Ilya - it is a lovely soft name and perfectly good for a boy.

oceryo · 06/05/2010 22:44

How do you pronounce it?

DilysPrice · 06/05/2010 22:47

mmmmm David McCallum.

I think you'd get a fair number of non-Man From Uncle fans being surprised that he was a boy though - it rings girl bells for anglophones. Can you (and he) live with the occasional silly question?

UmBongo · 06/05/2010 22:52

I know an Ilya, She is a horse.

Sorry, unhelpful comment but couldn't resist!

I have name that could be male or female and growing up as a tom-boyish girl sometimes found it hard to be mistaken for a boy as my name did not make it clear!

If you do call him that, please don't go for the little lord fauntleroy look with long hair as this will not help.

senua · 06/05/2010 22:56

Ilya Kuryakin.

Fluffyvacuity · 06/05/2010 23:02

like Isla as in Isla Fischer? Is it pronounced the same?

What about Daniel or Matthew or James or Oliver

[continues to her cause to attempt to spread sense and glitter across the baby name threads - see my stirling work on 'Delilah Skye']

paisleyleaf · 06/05/2010 23:07

Isn't it Elijah?

seeker · 06/05/2010 23:08

It's a Russian boy's name.

Is the baby a boy? Is the boy Russian? If the answer to both these questions is yes, then go ahead. if not, not.

Ponders · 06/05/2010 23:09

It should be pronounced eel-YA. (It's a Russian boy's name)

Fluffyvacuity · 06/05/2010 23:13

Elijah is lovely. agree with seeker above

(who strangely agreed with me re Delilah Skye I believe]

Ponders · 07/05/2010 00:26

"ILYA
Gender: Masculine
Usage: Russian
Pronounced: eel-YAH
Russian form of ELIJAH"

(from behind the name)

mathanxiety · 07/05/2010 16:24

Lovely. Pronounced EEL-ya, with the emphasis on the first syllable.

cloelia · 07/05/2010 19:31

Thought I might be the only one to remember Ilya Kuryakin (perhaps the programme came round twice?) wasn't he a swoon .... We all had little Man from Uncle passports in his name ....

Rockbird · 07/05/2010 19:36

Kuryakin. I always preferred Robert Vaughn personally, Ilya's polo necks got on my tits.

(I've seen it on bootleg DVD, not old enough for the original, sorry )
