Long term reader of mumsnet, but have delurked as I'm in need of inspiration.

Have just found out at 20 weeks that DC2 is a girl - we have loads of boys names but have really struggled for girls this time (other way round with DD1) so this is our preliminary shortlist - DD1 is Edie (Edith)

Rose
Clara
Marigold
Emmeline

Not sure I love any of these apart from Rose - but DP says Rose is 'plain'

any suggestions?

DD is an Edith we toyed with Iris and Agnes for DC2 who ended up a boy.

withorwithoutyou · 02/05/2010 19:20

I love Emmeline and would love to use it but it's too close to my DD's name.

Also like Clare and Rose, not at all keen on Marigold.

If Rose is a bit plain what about Rosa? I absolutely love that.

cyteen · 02/05/2010 19:23

Not Marigold.

Edie and Emmie is cute, maybe a bit too cute. Edith and Emmeline make a good stylistic pair.

Edie and Clara v nice.

Edie and Rose is gorgeous, and I disagree with your DP that Rose is plain. It's classic, elegant and unfrilly, and for that I love it. Also it's nice to see someone consider it as a first name!

reikizen · 02/05/2010 19:24

Clare is old school, most popular girls name in 1973 so you could start a 70's revival. Rose is plain in a good way. Clara is a bit clumsy sounding and Marigold is just awful. Rubber gloves?

Mouldiefairy · 02/05/2010 19:25

Love Agnes, but not keen on Aggie as a nn will prehaps suggest Ines/Inez to DP.

Oh - I love Marigold, its lovely, but not sure it goes with Edie.
I would go for Clara, or Rose

thecatatemygymsuit · 02/05/2010 19:33

Clara is lovely, and goes well with Edie I think.

How about Rosa/Rosamund?

Margot as an alternative to Marigold?

cyteen · 02/05/2010 19:34

Edie + Margot is very classy.

Mouldiefairy · 02/05/2010 19:35

If we went with Emmeline it would be shortend to Emma - Edie and Emmie is a bit twee.

I do like Marigold as DP had a lovely great aunt Marigold, but worry about teasing in the playground and also shortenings Mari/Goldie both not good.

My heart is set on Rose, will have to think of convincing argument for DP

If Rose is too plain for DH how about Rosanna nn Rose?

Edith & Rosanna sounds lovely!!

Esmee · 02/05/2010 19:40

Sorry, meant to say DP but too late!

catinthehat2 · 02/05/2010 19:42

Ivy

Then many many years down the line, someone like my (now very elderly) mum will have glamorous teenage Auntie Ivy and her big sister Auntie Edie.

And Violet for your next daughter OK?

How about Christabel?

Rubena · 02/05/2010 20:31

Clara

mamatron · 02/05/2010 21:32

My own DD is Edie. One of her good friends is called Mabel. I think these work well together. Also how about Violet, Florence, Flora?

janeite · 02/05/2010 21:34

Emmeline is the nicest in your list, by a long shot imho. However, am not really fond of siblings with matching initials.

Dislike Marigold.
How about Maeve or Martha?

mollymax · 02/05/2010 21:40

My grand mother is called Edith, her sister is called Elizabeth (Betty) I always think they sound nice together.

Clary · 02/05/2010 21:40

Edith is a lovely name

Since I like it, my other fave names may please you...

Florence
Agnes
Constance (Connie)
Mabel
Cecilia
Rosa (as in Luxembourg)

Biscuitbreaker · 02/05/2010 22:13

Ooh, I like Mabel!

As for Agnes, is Ness too much of a leap for a nn?
Although, does she have to have a nn? At 2 syllables her name may never get shortened.

thisisyesterday · 02/05/2010 22:16

i ike all of your names

i know a small Edith with a sister Peggy which is very cute

Jenbot · 02/05/2010 22:18

Rose is very pretty.

CakeandRoses · 02/05/2010 22:50

Fight for Rose! Pleeeease!

I think it's lovely - very far from plain! One of those rare names that's simple but very feminine - and weirdly, not too popular as a first name.

It works for a child (our 5 year old niece is a very princessy Rose) and also for an adult (e.g. I've never thought of Kate Winslet's Titanic Rose as being plain!)

If you don't win on Rose then Clara is lovely too.

But try for Rose first

Mouldiefairy · 02/05/2010 23:01

I raised the subject of Rose with DP over dinner and played up how underused it is as a first name and I think he's coming round!

I think we've discounted Marigold and Emmeline (although Emmeline is a potential middle name).

Our new shortlist is

Rose
Clara
Mabel
Florence

Really like Mabel - may have to have DD3 now!

Thanks for all your suggestions

Nicely done!

Florence is great but I suspect it's starting to get v popular.

Love Mabel too but still like Rose the best.
