Nathaniel or Dylan

I think we're down to these two for our final boys names! Nathaniel was always my favourite boys name but DH had heart set on Dylan so we were going with that, but now he's suddenly changing his mind...

My concern with Nathaniel is it's a bit long for a little boy! Though NN would probably be Nate.

Any preferences anyone? How popular is Nathaniel? I've never met one old or young!

MN will be James.

He will only be little for a short while in his life!

I think Nathaniel is much better than Dylan.

BooBooChicken · 02/05/2010 14:56

i love nathaniel also dominic

dannas · 02/05/2010 14:57

I much prefer Dylan.

I dislike Nate, Nathan & Nathaniel. They seem so whiney to me.

Dylan is a great name.

recireci · 02/05/2010 14:58

Dylan

Aubergines · 02/05/2010 15:04

I love Nathaniel. Dylan is much more common and just doesn't have the same depth (there is a better way of expressing what I mean by that but sadly I can't think of it).

HelenFF · 02/05/2010 15:45

I love Nathaniel. We're probably going with Nathan for ours just because OH prefers the shorter version, but I like all varieties of the name.

LittleSilver · 02/05/2010 19:02

Nathaniel (a la "War of the Worlds") because Dylan is just done to death.

trixiechick · 02/05/2010 19:30

Nathaniel is great and Nate is an easy nn. agree with little silver about Dylan.

MamaLazarou · 02/05/2010 19:31

They are both excellent names. I would go for Nathaniel, as it's slightly less common (common as in widely-used, not trashy).

MaisietheMorningsideCat · 02/05/2010 19:34

Definitely Nathaniel. Dylan is too common popular, and too much like a pet's name

Nathaniel is my dh's favourite boys name, we didn't use it though! There is a incredible 19th century Irish painter by the name of Nathaniel Hone.

I used to love th ename Dylan but there are just too many of them now.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 02/05/2010 20:13

Nathaniel deffo.

loobylu3 · 02/05/2010 21:40

Nathaniel James definitely! It's lovely
Nate is a great nn.

BellaCullen · 02/05/2010 21:45

Nathaniel James is lovely. My youngest is called Nathaniel and everybody loves it.Have always liked it and just had to fight over calling him just Nathan to Nathaniel which I think sounds much nicer.

feedthegoat · 02/05/2010 21:48

I think they are both nice names. And popularity wise, there is one of each in ds's pre school class. Not much help am I?

SqueezyB · 03/05/2010 18:06

Wow, thanks for the positive comments, I thought Dylan would win out over Nathaniel but looks like I was wrong! Leaning more and more towards Nathaniel now, with Nate as a nn. Still love Dylan, but I love the fact that DD has quite an uncommon name, so I'd like to do the same for no.2 if possible.

Thank you!

Nathaniel Dylan would be a great name if you decided to use both

eatyourveg · 03/05/2010 18:44

APassionateWoman · 03/05/2010 19:19

Nathaniel far superior.

Dylan

My late best friend was called Nathaniel and we called him Nat. Love it like I loved him.
