Have read quite a few times on various threads of names being referred to as 'chavvy'. Just so I know, what names are considered chavvy and which ones are definitely not. Are there some names where people would disagree?

Just discussed this with my Dh and we agree that any name you ever heard shouted across Woolworths is chavvy. Personal experience includes Keanu, Chardonnay!!!

One of the poshest people I know called her boy Jayden... and the family doesn't meet any other Chav stereotype, either. Arty smartly dressed parents who send their kids to a prep school.

I guess Chav is just another way of saying "common" as in "bad taste". It's a description riddled with class prejudices, which is probably why I as a furrener just cannot get it .

Chav is just middle class perception that they have less ready cash than lower classes. It's more about ostentatious use of money - money spent on nails and labels rather than mortgage or sensible boring things. Sour grapes really.

Does it really matter? Some of the names which became perfectly acceptable would once have been considered workmen's names (Harry and Charlie spring to mind) but then people higher up the social scale stated to use them and they became popular. Similarly Ruby and Florence for girls. As someone else pointed out names start at the top of society and work their way down, often in cycles.

I agree with the comments that it must be partly a regional thing - I live in Scotland, and a lot of the names mentioned on this thread as being chavvy would be seen as being perfectly mainstream/middle class up here.

I don't see how traditional and normal names like Josh, Harry and Leah and Gemma are 'chav' at all personally
