Think I made the wrong choice

we couldnt decide on a name for our precious son for ages although i always wanted to call him Jesse. We chose Jesse in the end but now I wish I had chosen something so different as wasnt prepared for the reactions we would get from some people. His middle name is Kurt - my hubbys choice - may be we should start calling him that - hes only 10wks so wont know the difference.

Still love the name Jesse though

Jesse is a completely normal and lovely boys name here is Australia.
Stick to your guns and keep the name you love

Go with Kurt. Jesse has been discussed a lot here on the Baby Names Topic -- a lot of people think it's a bit girly. Sorry people have been wincing though; that's not very nice.

I don't think you should change a name you love just because of the reactions of a few very rude people. If you love it, stick with it.

I may be wrong, but it doesn't sound like you prefer Kurt to Jesse. You could always add in another middle name if you are really unsure to give you some options later

Jesse not a name I particularly love, but prefer it to Kurt (I wouldn't be so rude to tell you that in RL). Do not change your baby's name because people don't share your taste. You love the name so keep it. It is the other people that have the problem. Be confident in your choice. Also names grow on people so their initial reaction might change - not that you should care.

If you like the name keep the name. It's not as if you slipped up and accidentally called him Humbert Humbert. Jesse isn't particularly outlandish, his peers won't think anything of it at all.

Thank you everyone for your posts they have made me feel alot better I guess if you want to choose a name for your child which is a little out of the ordinary you have to be prepared for some people not to like it. I dont think I would ever give someone my opinion on their childs name unless they asked.

Have read some of the other discussions on Jesse on this site which made me feel worse! but will think about for a bit longer before we go changing anything.

Just to reassure you, we couldn't decide for DS - actually registered him on the last possible day! He was called his baby nickname for the first two years of his life, then we started calling him his 'proper' name.
Had no effect on him or anyone else - so don't worry - there's no rush.

I wouldn't worry, Jesse is a cool name (Isn't that the name of that sizzling hot actor on House that used to be on Neighbours?) Kurt reminds me of Cobain- fine musician etc but I don't know that I'd name my son after him...

My son has a Welsh name that non-Welsh-speakers think is weird. Nobody's been outright rude though- It tends to go "Oooooh, what's his name?" "Welsh name" "Oh. Right."
I take it people's reactions to Jesse have been a bit more extreme?

Don't forget when your baby is tiny the slightest little comment can seem HUGE, your hormones and protective instincts are off the scale. Just keep in mind that this is the name that you and dh chose for your baby. All those people get to chose their names for their children, they don't get to name yours as well.

As Doozie says, if you love it then keep it and ignore people who don't share your taste. No name will please everyone.

My (grown-up) step-brother is called Jesse and loves his name. He's never mentioned having any teasing or issues about it. Come to think of it, I don't think his mother has ever mentioned having any negative reactions to it either.

And Tocca is right - the combo of hormones and protectiveness will make a seem like a total insult!

We choose a slightly unusual name for our DS1 and to begin with I would analyse reactions to his name like mad. Now, I don't give a damn!

I'm sure once you start to hear a few more positive comments and Jesse starts to really grow into his name, you really won't think twice about what people think of it.

I love the name. If you're not in Scotland then I'd continue to use it.

I've always liked Jesse! And I never thought it was feminine (until I read the thread...!)
My son has an unusual first name and an even more unusual middle name but they both suit him and people can deal with it! They're Welsh names.
