Middle name quandry

Hello

We are expecting dc2 in early July and we've chosen Edward Davis for a boy. Edward is the first name of all the boys born in my dh's family for the last 4 generations. However, dh is the only one of his siblings who is likely to reproduce this generation and I really like the name so I'm happy to go along with the tradition Davis is my maiden name and there is no question about not using it as a middle name.

BUT, from what I can gather, the males with the name Edward (only one last generation and one before that too) have used their middle name instead of Edward. So should we tack on another middle name to give our potential son this option, just in case Davis is seen as a bit whacky?

Or am I overthinking this? (likely!)

Please help my poor confused pregnant brain. Any suggestions would be great too, I'm rubbish at boys names!

If they use their middle names in lieu of Edward that's probably to avoid confusion with the other Edwards. From what you've said it sounds like there aren't many males in your DH's family who actually go by Edward, so it should be fine to assume that your DC would just use Edward IMO.

Don't forget that Edward is very versatile when it comes to nicknames. Your DC could end up being Ed, Eddie, Ted, Teddy, Ned, Neddie etc.

Thanks Padraig...Ted is our preferred nn and I probably am overthinking this now, after all fil is known as Beverly Damn the late pregnancy name wobbles!

Beverly?

Bet you're glad that it's Edward that's the family name!

Exactly! I'm willing to keep up a naming tradition that's not completely bonkers!
