Camilla - people's view...

If our little one turns out to be a girl we are toying with the idea of Camilla for a girl with a view to possibly shortening it to Milly when young.

What are your views on it - i think its a really pretty name but aware it could be a bit polarising... what do you think?

I like Camilla a lot, despite the Parker-Bowles woman. The little Polish Camilla I know is known as Meela/Mila by her family.

Camilla is lovely. I went to school with a gorgeous Camilla, blonde hair, olive skin, I was soooo jealous I wouldn't particularly think Parker Bowles either and contemporaries of your dd certainly won't. She'll have snuffed it or have a different title by then

I prefer Camille to Camilla.

Milly is a pretty, although v popular, nn for Camilla.

I have a friend called Camille and she is often known as Cam.

Maybe Camellia? like the flower. Prefer that.

I don't think people should mention their child's name is blah on a thread about the name BLAH.

(you can say your child's name if you want, on a thread not about that name)

I love it - Camilla is a beautiful name.

I shall never forget the V. posh private-school-girl Camilla who I went to Ballet with. The teacher loved her, the teacher did NOT like me (wrong side of the tracks, me) If I listened to the teacher, I was a little elephant next to the willowy form of the gazelle-like Camilla.

Camilla and I took our first exam and both ended up with the top marks in the class. Together.

the teacher's face was an absolute picture when she told us. It was my first lesson in discrimination and I've never forgotten it

Anyway, my ballet Camilla was a lovely girl

and I still love the name partly because of her and partly because of what it taught me about life

I love Camilla [quickly adds it to shortlist] and wouldn't worry too much about the CPB connection. I think people quickly forget that kind of thing once they know a person. I'm not personally mad keen on Milly (poss just cos I know an awful one!) but think Milla or Cam are great nns.

Magaly - I agree it does make it harder for people to give their honest opinion if they dislike the name but I think there are ways of saying politely that the name is not for you (and the people that have said they've named their DC that name do have to expect some negatives comments about it). I personally like it when people say they've named their own DC Blah, as it's really helpful when you're sizing up names to know the experiences of parents who chose that name.

Incidentally, Padraig's insult wasn't even about the name the OP was asking about. It was just a rude and irrelevant comment imo.

Oh and regarding Camille - it is lovely too and one of those conveniently short but still pretty names.

The only possible problem is that there can be a bit of a problem with names ending in an L sound depending on where you live.

If you live in an area where some people have a cockney or estuary accent then some will pronounce L-ending words as a W, which to my ear really spoils them.

For example, I knew a boy with the name Joel but most of the people that knew him (parents included) called him something like Jow) which I thought ruined a lovely name.

I love Camilla (with Milla as the nn). However, DH vetoed it for me. When I suggested it, he simply said "Parker-Bowles" and raised his eyes to heaven!

I like Camilla, but would avoid it if you have a double barrelled surname though.

Personally I prefer the nn Milla. Its a bit more grown up in my opinion, so could still be used when she's older.

Go with Camille, lovely but much less horsey posh

Don't forget CPB will be the feckin queen, not just some horsey posh bird on the cover of the Daily Mail.

Camille is poncy which is far worse than horsey posh. And it's not a very nice name. Camilla Parker-Horse may be nearly queen but then who will remember or give a toss what her name used to be?
