Gabriel or what

Found out yesterday we are expecting a boy - just completely delighted and over the moon - he did hanker for a boy if i am honest and the only problem now is what to call him.... H likes Raphael too. We do have a bit of a thing for unusual and a bit poncy sounding names and wanted something a bit special but it is harder with boys isn't it? I really like Florian but I know its really flowery and maybe a bit girly..

What are your thoughts Ladies? any fabulous suggestions?

Love Gabriel but don't like Florian.

How about:
Thaddeus
Fabian
Vincent
Sebastian
Laurence
Rupert
Barnaby
Benedict
Hector

Love love love Gabriel but I worry it will be read out in class as Gabrielle by a new teacher etc. It's one of my top boys names

tartyhighheels · 17/04/2010 14:09

ooh i like Fabian but H was a bit err about it - Benedict I like but people will just call him Ben no?

I like Bastian rather than Sebastian too but again H was err nope. I also really dig Corin - but H says too much like Colin (he has a point but still love it

great taste Rindercella!

janeite · 17/04/2010 14:34

I can never see the name Cassius without wanting to put 'yon' in front of it. 'Such men are dangerous' you know!

LetThereBeRock · 17/04/2010 15:27

I love Gabriel. It's a fantastic name.

GladioliBuckets · 17/04/2010 15:36

Lucian and Florian sound daft together IMO.

soapboxqueen · 17/04/2010 15:37

My ds is a Gabriel and yes he tends to get called Gabrielle when people see his name written down. Very calmly point out that they aren't even spelled the same.

Rindercella · 17/04/2010 16:00

Dizzy, that was quite a coincidence!

I like Gabriel, but not Raphael or Florian.

jordanna79 · 17/04/2010 18:20

They are two of my favourite names. Gabriel is lovely but not too keen that people shorten it to Gabe...Florian is the most beautiful name ever I love it love it love it....but I'm also not allowed it! I also love Jolian - as in the Forsythe Saga - but that's asking for trouble!!

thisisyesterday · 17/04/2010 18:29

I have a Gabriel, so love that obviously!!!

I did think about Raphael for our third, but thought that one archangel was probably enough. he doesn't live up to his name! lol

we very, very, very nearly used Lucien for number 3 as well

I also like Fabian,
Tobias
Josiah
Caius
Benedict
Benjamin
Asher
Jonas

CirrhosisByTheSea · 17/04/2010 18:34

I think Gabriel is absolutely lovely

Florian - awful and your child will have a miserable school life unless you are VERY loaded and/or do not plan to send them to school!

Maybe Reuben would be quite 'you'?

ChutesTooNarrow · 17/04/2010 18:36

I have a Gabriel, it's an excellent name

We also considered Gideon, Julian, Sebastian.
