Can't decide whether to go for classic or cool

Ok so here's my dilemma.

I am expecting twin boys and can't decide whether to go for classic names or cooler more hip names.

We are thinking Edward & Louis, or the cooler but less safe Felix & Dexter?

Both myself and husband love all the names but don't want to regret our choices a few years down the line.

What to do??? Help!

prefer Edward and Louis

GoldenSnitch · 17/04/2010 08:30

My friend just named her son Dexter. Reminds me of a serial killer.

Obviously, I didn't tell her that!

jellybeans · 17/04/2010 10:33

Edward and Louis. Like Felix and Louis better though.

anonymumma · 17/04/2010 10:46

Thanks for all the helpful comments.

I'm not worried about whether they're popular in other countries. I have intentionally avoided James, William etc because they are too popular here.

I had a feeling there would be suggestions to mix the two ie Edward & Felix, but we've decided not to do this as we don't want one to think he has a less cool name in years to come!

I did think of putting the 'cool' names in the middle but I like them less this way. Edward Dexter doesn't really do it for me.

Most of the comments have crossed my mind. The Twilight thing did worry me but I like Edward enough to not worry too much.

The D list celeb comment did make me laugh! This just about sums up my concerns!

More thoughts appreciated!

I would never consciously go for a 'cool' name. It just seems like trying too hard. Go for a name you like without worrying about whether it's cool or not. My favourite from your list is Edward.

debaronz · 17/04/2010 12:32

Agree with LynetteScavo, I don't think of Louis as a classic name. There are other more classic boys names which could be due a revival. Frederick, John, Richard for example.

janeite · 17/04/2010 12:43

Edward and Louis much nicer imho. Then again, Felix is a name that I really don't like.

mountainmonkey · 17/04/2010 13:00

I like Dexter and Felix but they do remind me of this

and this

clams · 17/04/2010 13:06

I wouldn't think of Felix as cool, it's the name of an elderly relative. Edward and Felix match in my mind and are a modern but not matchy combo.

Anyone over the age of 18 needs to be sensibly cautious about being cool. Using the term alone probably means your intentions may backfire. Especially with Dexter - I'm sorry, IMHO it shouts 'try-hard'.

doubleexpresso · 17/04/2010 13:20

Felix & Ned!

anonymumma · 17/04/2010 13:48

I know too many Freddies already! I do like it though.

I am put of a bit by Dexter. Will see what my husband thinks of the comments.

Louis is more classic than Dexter type names. I guess I see Royal names as the classic ones.

What do you think of Oscar? It's another name being chucked about but discounted it as didn't want Felix & Oscar together (The Odd Couple)

Not keen on Dexter - will sound odd at different ages IMHO. Just reading a book at moment with main character-born in late 60s-with that name and it sounds very dated as he gets older in the book!

I love any combo of edward felix and Louis-all fab names

janeite · 17/04/2010 13:52

Edward and Oscar nice together too.

4madboys · 17/04/2010 13:59

i like oscar, i have one myself!

ds1 was nearly a felix but i vetoed it because of the cat food, so he is a theo instead, theo and oscar go together well

i dont like dexter cos of the serial killer programme and didnt charlotte church call her ds dexter?

louis is nice

StrictlyKatty · 17/04/2010 14:02

100% Felix and Dexter.

Louis is a horrible horrible name but I do like Edward.

brummiemummie · 17/04/2010 14:08

I like Oscar too

I've gone off Edward a bit since Twilight came out but agree it's a nice, classic name.

Felix makes me think of cats.

I don't like Dexter but that's because there's a truly foul boy in DD3's year with that name.

Oscar and Edward do go nicely together

I think Edward and Louis are quite classic and cool.

Dexter is horrible, really naff. Felix - hmm, no. But too trendy/try too hard?

crumpette · 17/04/2010 14:17

Edward Felix and Louis Dexter?

I'd go for Edward and Louis, definitely

noddyholder · 17/04/2010 14:17

Def Ed and Felix dexter no! Louis v common here in the SE and not cool at all

CrankyTwanky · 17/04/2010 14:20

Felix Dexter

said · 17/04/2010 14:23

Actually, I don't think whether a name is "cool" or not should be a criteria. It should be because you like it. "Cool" is a very transitory concept.

Dexter's still a naff name though

anonymumma · 17/04/2010 14:37

Said - I do agree with the cool thing. I just didn't know how to describe the names. I guess trendy is a better way of describing.

I think I like Edward & Louis for now. I WILL worry about the try hard image of the other names.

What middle names would you put with Edward & Louis? Two middle names or one?

These are likely to be our only children so maybe two middle names so we can use all the names we like . Maybe stick Felix in there somewhere but I'm not sure it goes.

Oh, I think indulgence is allowed for middle names.

edward and Felix the best combo imo (I have an Edward Felix )

Not sure about Louis - there will always be people who pronounce it Lewis I think.
