Please can you tell me what you think of the following names. They are fairly simple, but I don't think used so much any more.

Ann
Mary
Jane
Laura
Sylvia
Lorna

I like Ann, perhaps because it is my Mum's name. I've never been keen on Mary, Jane I tend to think of as a bit 70's. Laura I think is quite pretty, Sylvia I'm not keen on. And Lorna I kind of like, although I know one I'm not keen on so it puts me off!

All lovely names which have all been very popular in the past.

There's quite a fun NameWizard where you can type in a name and it will show you when, over the last century, it was most popular.

www.babynamewizard.com/voyager#ms=false&exact=false

Type in one letter at a time as it filters the graph with each leter!

Sylvia - nice but I tend more towards Sylvie

Lorna/Laura - I never liked and there were tonnes in school but then I was a 70s child lol

Mary - ok
Jane - ok
Ann - prefer Anna

Kneazle · 15/04/2010 13:41

I also love Anna

It's really difficult choosing names! I have two friends who have just had babies and both have gone with names on my short list which means my short list is getting even shorter, one name left for boys that me and my DH agree on!! But getting back to the original op I love the name Mary I think it is very pretty - and well thats my favourite out of the options!

Ann -- Like it spelled 'Anne', for some mysterious reason. Also love Anna and Ana.
Mary -- LOVE
Jane -- Nice; I like 'Jayne' better, don't know why
Laura -- I knew a few growing up, think it's a bit dated
Sylvia -- LOVE (also love Cynthia)
Lorna -- Like

I like Sylvia the best but prefer the French version Sylvie.

sallyjaygorce · 15/04/2010 15:45

Ann is my DD's middle name and often use it with her first name. I know a little Annie. Lovely name and suits her.

Kneazle · 15/04/2010 15:45

Math
"Anne with an e is so much more distinguished" Anne of Green Gables is that why ?

MadameCastafiore · 15/04/2010 15:48

Anna is nicer than just Ann and if you use Jane use the Jane - the other one with the Y looks crap.

You know, that might just be it, Kneazle! That book has a lot to answer for.

AllieW · 15/04/2010 17:13

I love Sylvia - Sylvie is another pretty variant. Not keen on the others.

I really don't like Mary probably because there were about 4 of them in my school when I was a kid. Like laura, it's lovely.

ozmetric · 15/04/2010 17:31

Ann - like
Mary - like
Jane - quite like
Laura - like
Sylvia - OK. I don't prefer Sylvie as it just sounds like trying not to be Sylvia IYKWIM?
Lorna - prefer Laura
