I've already got a 20 month old called Phoebe but read on another (ahem) parenting site that becoming really chavtastic and a bit too common.
Thoughts..?
I already have a "Charlotte" and am now wondering whether I should have given in and called her Annabel or Georgina, DP's two favourites.
He has always hated the name Phoebe but let me "have it" as he got to name DC number 1.

Rubbish! It was my GGG Grandmother's name and she was definitely not a chav. If I'd had a girl I'd have used it!

katiepotatie · 10/04/2010 00:11

It's a beautiful name, ds's would have been Phoebe had he been a girl not chav at all

Tortington · 10/04/2010 00:12

nah not chav

ChippingIn · 10/04/2010 01:04

Irrespective of what you now think of the name - don't you think it's a bit late to be worrying yourself about it.

I actually quite like it, even though it's become popular and even though I always think of the Phoebe in Friends!! But no, it's not chavtastic.

DCs 3 & 4 can be Annabel & Georgina (or Andrew & George ;) )

ecstaticmumofeightplusfour · 10/04/2010 10:13

lovely biblical name not chavvy although very popular now .m/c a little girl at 18 weeks in 2005 who wouldf have been phoebe wasnt popular then. chose it because of phoebein romans 16 a helper of many. had only heard it prior to that on the archers phoebe tucker .couldnt use it with dd4 but still love it and think its sweet yet also grown up and serious

Paulinespens · 10/04/2010 23:04

ChippIn in, yup, it is a bit late to be worrying about it. She definately knows her name.
Although I love it, it's tough when no one else in the immediate family like it and the chav association on another site made me doubt my decision.
ecsaticmum, sorry to hear about your little girl. {sad}

Paulinespens - I wouldn't say it's too late to change it if you want to - if you called her Phoebe 'Rose' for a little while, then gradually started calling her 'Rose', she'd soon adapt to it - she's only wee. I meant more if it were me I'd feel odd about doing it at her age - because her baby 'stuff' would be as Phoebe yet her toddler/child stuff 'Rose'. However, there was an interesting thread on here a while ago about people changing their childrens names and quite a few had (for an assortment of reasons!!).

I am suprised that the immediate family haven't come around. I really don't like my niece's name (but never said anything to my B/SIL other than, 'Oh, that's nice') but once they're here and part of the family, you don't really think 'about' the name that much... it's just who they are (iyswim).

As for chavtastic on another parenting board - is it full or Tarquins & Ophelias??

It's lovely - stop worrying

CuppaTeaJanice · 11/04/2010 12:44

Phoebe is a lovely name, not 'chavvy' at all.

It's one of those names that some people aren't sure how to pronounce or spell though. I'm sure I read that there are about 50 or so girls each year called 'Pheobe'.

gemcgem · 11/04/2010 13:20

phoebe is lovley! chavs are more into maddieson an courtney arn't they !?!

bigstripeytiger · 11/04/2010 13:33

Phoebe is pretty popular at the moment, but that doesnt make it chavvy,
Bit late to change it now if she is 20 months old, IMO.

Oh dear. So how popular is it, exactly? I never know where people get the info on these things, but I don't know any Phoebes in RL. And Phoebe is the name we have almost settled on for DD, so I'm worrying slightly after reading this thread.

What other parenting site was it, OP?

Thing is, I know names can be popular without a problem, it's when they are "trendy", and therefore likely to date someone, that I feel shy of them. (I think Chloe has kind of gone that way, though it's a lovely name.)

DorotheaPlenticlew · 11/04/2010 20:45

gasp

bargainhuntingbetty · 11/04/2010 20:48

I think it is a lovely name. Never heard of it being Chavvy! Think Courtney, Chelsea are chav names.

DorotheaPlenticlew · 11/04/2010 20:49

No, fuck it, they're all wrong, it's Shakespearean fgs.

Sorry for thread hijack, OP!

Nemain · 11/04/2010 20:52

I love Phoebe

However, I do have reservations after DSs cousin misheard me suggesting names and thought I said "Flea-be".

Unfortunately all I think of now is Fleabe

legscrossed · 11/04/2010 20:59

got a 5 month old called phoebe.

dont thnk its chav ( but I guess i wouldnt)

all the local chavs round here do 'Jaden' n the like.

Apologies to all non chav Jadens.

Arent you just born chav regardless of name?

ChippingIn · 11/04/2010 22:42

Legscrossed - 'aren't you just born chav regardless of name' Love it - sounds right to me!!

I think names are popular in some areas and not in others. I don't know any Chloe's and still like the name, yet in other places it seems like Chloe has worn itself out!

jabberwocky · 11/04/2010 22:50

Lovely name

Hulababy · 11/04/2010 22:55

Phoebe is a popular name round here and we do know of a few. However it is pretty, and not in the least bit "common."

sweetie66 · 12/04/2010 13:31

Our DD is a Phoebe.
She is 6 and when we chose it, it was not very popular. She is the only one in her class called this.
We chose this because it was a traditional old English name.
However lots of younger children seem to now be called it so guess it has now increased in popularity (maybe we were trend setters!)
Don't think this is chav at all

Haliborange · 12/04/2010 16:27

I don't think my 6 month old Phoebe is a chav. At least she hasn't yet shown any particular interest in Burberry, or in standing around on street corners drinking Special Brew and getting knocked up.

No doubt I will be posting on MN right away for advice if the situation changes...

swanandduck · 12/04/2010 16:29

Don't think it's chavvy, but it's definitely very popular.

ShadeofViolet · 12/04/2010 16:34

I LOVE it, I think its a really lovely name - it is becoming more popular (I know three ranging from 7 months to 4), but definately not chavvy.

Barbles · 13/04/2010 12:09

My DD is called Phoebe and I think its lovely still. People always comment on it but I do get the 'oh like Friends' comments a lot especially as the OH has got a Friends character name too.

I dont thinks its chavvy at all. When I was preggers I wanted a name that was pretty and girly but wasnt a common one and the OH came up with this. I have noticed though since DD was born it has become more popular, its wasnt on any lists when she was born and now its on the top 50 list.
