Ivy... or Alice?

DS1 is called Harry.
DH chose it after his favourite grandfather.

So I get to have a little more sway this time round.

DD due in May - I suggested either Ivy or Alice and DH laughed - he likes both, but because the wife of his fave GP (his GM) was called IVY ALICE!

Completely freaked me out.

Anyway - I now can't decide if I still like either/both names and if its because we'll have two children names after DH's married GP's.

And not a name from my side of the family (which we said we wouldn't do from either side of the family, for arguments sake).

So - can you give me your opinions on both? Either?

I like both actually, although not together.
They are both quite old-fashioned which I love. What about Olive? or Violet? both lovely and unusual and similar roots.

Alice

Can't help thinking of Ivy Tyldesley when I hear the name Ivy

newmomma · 09/04/2010 11:10

Violet was the 'other' grandmothers name!!! I do quite like it - although I think SIL is saving it for if she has a girl in the future.

Not keen on Olive. I've always had scrawny ankles (riciulous, I know, but everyone hates something on their body!) and used to call myself Olive oil... (popeye reference)!

Not sure you'll be able to get round this now you've thought of it IYSWIM.

Edith?
Cecilia?

Doozie · 09/04/2010 13:03

Alice is my pick. I prefer Iris to Ivy.

telsa · 09/04/2010 13:42

Both very nice - but I think Alice has the edge. and flows better with Harry

swanandduck · 09/04/2010 16:18

I much prefer Alice. Ivy is a bit old ladyish.

mathanxiety · 09/04/2010 19:04

Alice for me too.

pointydog · 09/04/2010 19:17

Alice

piscesmoon · 09/04/2010 19:19

Alice. Poison Ivy-clinging Ivy-neither are nice!

allyfe · 09/04/2010 19:39

Love Alice. Not keen on Ivy.

bubbles12 · 09/04/2010 19:54

Alice, best name in the world!

DorotheaPlenticlew · 09/04/2010 19:55

Alice.

soapboxqueen · 09/04/2010 20:01

Alice. Ivy is Poison Ivy

lucy567 · 09/04/2010 20:56

Love both names, I have two DS's but wanted to call a girl Alice Ivy. Love it especially together. I feel envious that you can use the names sob sob!!!!

Tas1 · 09/04/2010 21:08

Alice.

minimoos · 10/04/2010 15:53

Alice is best. I think Ivy sounds very harsh and not pretty at all.

MyThumbsHaveGoneWeird · 10/04/2010 21:47

I like Ivy!

LaRagazzaInglese · 10/04/2010 22:48

I prefer Ivy but think Alice sounds better with Harry.

JaynieB · 10/04/2010 22:49

Alice gets my vote.

sharbie · 10/04/2010 22:53

I like both but Alice wins as I've got one and I am so glad I picked this name (nearly 13 years ago.) Took ages to find a middle name tho in the end we went for Mary.

CrystalQueen · 10/04/2010 22:59

Alice, but I'm biased
The only problem with it is having to correct people that it's not Alison. But maybe that's a Scottish thing.

shockers · 10/04/2010 23:03

Not keen on Ivy but love Alice.

Bonners · 11/04/2010 18:15

Ooooo, I think Ivy wins. It's a beautiful name and it's on my own list. My DP has suggested Alice but I just feel it's a wee bit plain.
