Barnaby is brilliant. Barney is a freaky purple dinosaur.

He may be doing Barnaby Bear in school in five or six years' time. (History, geography, huge thing with the BBC.) Even the strongest child would have trouble coping with 29 heads turning to him every single time the bear was mentioned. And they would.

My son is Barnaby and dh was a bit reticent at first but loves it now. We call him Barnes for short or B. We haven't come across any other Barnabys either so it doesn't seem soo common ( unlike the many Oscars and Sebastions around) anyway I didn't like Barney at all and was worried people would use it but they don't. I now have a prob as dc2 imminent and no idea what to name if a boy as only had Barnaby on my list :-(

Barnabas

Barnaby is much nicer in my head than Barney - latter = dinosaur, purple, former = detective, midsomer murders :-)

I prefer Barney... wouldn't call my ds that because of purple evil dinosaur connotations, but think its a sweeter, less pretentious name.

i think a child called barnaby might be open to more ridicule. tis quite a posh name.

although when i hear the name barney now i think of the show how i met your mother, where barney is quite a lovable character.

AllieW · 08/04/2010 12:39

I love Barnaby. The only reference which comes to mind is this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnaby_Rudge

I'm sure there are plenty of other schools materials which use particular named characters and if all such things were eliminated you might not have much choice. Janet and John didn't become less popular because of the books I'm sure!

Thanks for all your help I may show this thread to dh in the hope that it will convince him. I love the name so much but know he has to like it too !

I prefer just Barney. Barnaby makes me think bear.

Lovethesea · 08/04/2010 21:14

I'd always think Barney short for something ... like Barnaby!

ChippingIn · 10/04/2010 00:44

Sorry, but unless he's a Bear or a Dinosaur I wouldn't choose either
