Hi everyone! My friend has named her baby 'Uist' I think it maybe Scottish. I have no idea how to pronounce it and don't want to offend my friend when I go over to see them both tomorrow, any ideas? Help is very much appreciated! Thanks!

You - issed (like pissed sound)
It's a Scottish island (well two - north and south)

Rossco · 07/04/2010 20:25

Smac is right. You-issed.

One (or two) of the Hebrides.

soupmaker · 07/04/2010 20:35

You should ask her why she didn't call her Benbecula?

Ponders · 07/04/2010 20:40

Or Rum or Muck or Eigg...

Is Uist even an actual name???

Galena · 07/04/2010 21:25

Heh, there are so many other pretty names she could have chosen - Iona, Skye, Jura... Why oh why Uist?! I joked about calling DD 'Muck' or 'Eigg' if she was a boy. Chose one of the three I suggested instead.

Ponders · 07/04/2010 22:10

I was assuming Uist would be a boy

Pingpong · 08/04/2010 07:14

Dinkytinky please confirm the sex of baby Uist. Like Ponders I assumed it was a boy as I've only ever heard it used for boys!

CurlyCasper · 08/04/2010 07:52

Yoo-ist, with emphasises on the Yoo. Never heard of it used as a person's name though.

CurlyCasper · 08/04/2010 07:52

or even emphasis

ReshapeWhileDamp · 13/04/2010 11:31

Benbecula is clearly a better choice than Uist - am surprised at OP's friend.

(would call a cat Benbecula, I think.)

CrankyTwanky · 13/04/2010 23:38

Yoo-ist.
Tis a bleak island off the West coast of Scotland.
I knew an Iona when I lived up there.

macmam · 14/04/2010 20:43

Bog off Cranky, both North and South Uist are brilliant as is Benbecula.

dizzydixies · 14/04/2010 21:21

as nice as they may be macmam I'd hardly use it for a baby name

bless the wee soul - all smacks of a bit too try hard

macmam · 14/04/2010 21:51

Yes agree Dizzy not name material, however the place is brilliant.

dizzydixies · 14/04/2010 21:57

agree completely, my lovely lovely cousin in law fares from there and you couldn't meet a nicer bloke

CrankyTwanky · 14/04/2010 22:43

Lol!
No offence macman!

I was once punched by a boxer from Uist. And by a para from Eigg.
When I was a teenager.
They breed em' drunk 'n' violent up there sometimes.

(Except for the being punched bit.)

macmam · 15/04/2010 10:02

Tis cool..was defending my ancestry.... And much as I love the place they do sometimes breed em like you say...

zaidagal · 21/04/2010 20:02

Thats a new twist on the island names! My wee boy is named Arran for the Scottish island Arran. Lewis and Harris are also used for boys. This is the first Uist Ive heard about....interesting!
