DH has suggested this name and i actually really like it....he doesn't normally suggest names bless him, but some of my latest suggestions have prompted him to declare that we are naming a child and not a cocktail so i have agreed to be more realistic...

We have an irish surname but neither of us are irish....I would like to go with Niamh as think it is far nicer so i guess my question would be a) what does one think of this name and b) can a non irish person 'get away' with the irish spelling?

Surname is Minahan.

TIA

re: correcting people on the spelling...Friend of a friend gets corrected all the time when saying her name, she's pretty sure after 30 years she know show to pronounce her name... but still people will tell her that it's 'neeve'. So actually it's fairly well known in Australia too

It's lovely.

I have a REALLY irish surname and my niece is Niamhthe only comment that has ever been made is that her initials are nob but I think the irish apelling is far nicer.
Lovely name IMO

Niamh is lovely, and if some people have to be told how to spell it, others will be mystified by Neve.

What's the Welsh version, bronze?

Goingspare · 09/04/2010 11:04

Oh, and I went to school years ago with an Irish girl called Niav, just to add fuel to the fire.

BrigitteBardot · 09/04/2010 11:06

Lovely.

My friend has a Neve - N-eve. Eve but with a N in front. Not Nev. Lovely name. She has an Welsh surname.

I have a Niamh and most people now recognise it without any problems of pronunciation.
We often get it spelt incorrectly but I just let it go - if that's likely to annoy you then that could be the only downside.
My other DD has a "normal" name (i.e. that sounds like it's spelt) but we still always have to spell that as there's so many ways to spell it.
