Tree names

I am desperate for an individual name for a girl. It has been suggested on another thread that vegetable names are the new flower names, but I don't want to surf anybody else's wave, tbh, so I am now investigating Tree names.

Is it a good idea?

I am thinking Yew at the moment.

Rowan, would surely be perfect? Or Holly?

wuglet · 06/04/2010 21:44

Laurel?

Aspen?

lifeas3plus1 · 06/04/2010 21:45

Apple

Willow I love.

sweetnitanitro · 06/04/2010 21:45

What about Rowan or Willow? How individual does it have to be? There are lots of lovely tree names but I don't think Yew works at all.

shallishanti · 06/04/2010 21:45

Hazel
Willow

hopperdee · 06/04/2010 21:46

Maple or Willow?

latermater · 06/04/2010 21:46

Linden?
Sycamore?

ellesabe · 06/04/2010 21:48

Bay?

midnightexpress · 06/04/2010 21:48

Vegetable names? Like what? Heavens.

Yew, IMO has some connotations I wouldn't like for a baby - planted in chuchyards, highly poisonous, generally rather gloomy.

Laurel is quite nice though. Myrtle?

preggobrain · 06/04/2010 21:48

What's wrong with Yew?

And of course it is also pronounced like 'you' which will be very very confusing for the poor child.

'Hey, you!'
'Me?'
'No, not you, Yew. You'. etc.

midnightexpress · 06/04/2010 21:50

Or is this a joke?

perhaps...

Habbibu · 06/04/2010 21:50

Not Yew - way too confusing, plus loads of "hey yew"'s.

Ash
Rowan
Cherry
Acacia

SoupDragon · 06/04/2010 21:51

Vegetable names!

[guffaw]

SoupDragon · 06/04/2010 21:53

"I don't want to surf anybody else's wave, tbh, so I am now investigating Tree names."

But tree names have been around for ages! Rowan and Willow being the most common.

Yew is utterly ridiculous though and only sounds good because your brain is pregnant.

Habbibu · 06/04/2010 21:54

Are people really calling their children Cabbage and Squash?

hocuspontas · 06/04/2010 21:54

Vegetables????

I can only think of Lettice. Pepper would be quite quirky I suppose. But am at a loss to think of any others!

Lots of tree names are nice. Laurel, Hazel etc

Surprise · 06/04/2010 21:55

Trees in our garden:

Walnut
Willow
Elder
Cherry
Victoria Plum
Dwarf Apple
Lelandii
Holly

Take your pick! (Although Lelandii would be my favourite ).

I know a lovely Rowan and also a Hazel.

I wanted to go with Aubergine, after I noticed it in the title of a Chat thread. Stroke of genius, I thought, to use it as a name. I assumed it was about that night's dinner, but the poster actually meant it as a name (should have used Baby Names section, surely?). I am gutted. I thought I was being really original

I think that Yew might work well though- "Hey Yew" sort of kills two birds with one stone, surely? No more confusing than lots of other names.

Turnip

preggobrain · 06/04/2010 22:00

Lelandii definitely works, but sounds a little bit Page Three Girl for my taste, sorry. You're not going to use it, are you?

Chard
Zucchini
Kale
Pumpkin

midnightexpress · 06/04/2010 22:04

'Kale' habbs - is that how they pronounce 'Kyle' in Morningsidde, d'you think?
