What do you think about each of these names?

Pronounced See-ah and Zee-ah

Sorry they sound "made up"

twosofar · 05/04/2010 17:53

Zia is Italian for Auntie

Bucharest · 05/04/2010 17:55

....and Sia is Italian for "either" (as in either....or (sia...sia)

MissJacksonIfYourNasty · 05/04/2010 17:56

Don't be sorry, they're not names for my baby (I'm not even pregnant), but names I have recently heard.

Sia is not made up, it's Greek, apparently.

Just wondered where Zia was from and whether anyone had heard it before. I thought it was rather sweet. The girl in question is Israeli. May be a NN for something, actually.

I used to work with a Zia. Full name was Sinobia. She was from South Africa, IIRC.

beanlet · 05/04/2010 19:50

Zia is an Islamic boy's name (as in Zia ul-Haq, former military dictator of Pakistan).

Sia I've never heard, but it sounds a bit snakey. SSSsss....

scottishmummy · 05/04/2010 20:04

reminds me of sia furler singer

catho76 · 05/04/2010 20:25

My friend has a little girl called Sia - her heritage is African and it means "first born girl". I think it's a beautiful name.

dizzydixies · 05/04/2010 20:43

I knew a girl called Sia pn See-Ah, she was lovely

Fourleaf · 05/04/2010 21:15

I know a baby Zia - I think it's lovely.

lowrib · 06/04/2010 00:01

I know a Zia, but she pronounces it Ziya.

Lovely name.

zozzle · 06/04/2010 09:10

One of the female band members in the band "The Dandy Warhols" is called Zia so I always consider it quite cool!

CuppaTeaJanice · 06/04/2010 13:08

Sia was on our girl shortlist. It wasn't in the baby name book so I assumed I'd made it up, although there was a singer a few years ago called Sia.

I think actually it's a shortened form of Anastasia.

I like it though

Zia reminds me of that buggy, the Petite Star Zia.

pixiestix · 06/04/2010 13:45

There are loads of Sia's in Samoa, so I associate it with gorgeous Polynesian women! Don't know what it means in Samoan though.

beanlet · 06/04/2010 15:05

Anastasia is a gorgeous name.

livviloo · 06/04/2010 22:49

zia was in this en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mysterious_Cities_of_Gold

AllieW · 07/04/2010 13:01

I was about to post that livviloo - great minds and all that. I'm not terribly keen on either. I like beanlet's suggestion of Anastasia.

ChynaDoll2006 · 07/04/2010 20:05

i know an African Sia and an Indian Sia. I don't know any Zia's but I think the names overlap many different cultures.

LaRagazzaInglese · 10/04/2010 00:35
